Product Introduction

01Product Overview

TUBE CROSS-SECTION HEAT-RESISTANT WALL

DIN 17175 13CrMo44 is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum heat-resistant steel. The name itself is a specification: 13 stands for about 0.13 % carbon, CrMo marks the chromium-molybdenum alloying that gives the steel its high-temperature strength, and 44 is the ~440 MPa minimum tensile strength the grade is rolled to. Its German material number is 1.7335. It is the steel you reach for when a boiler tube, a steam line or a pressure part has to keep its strength and resist hydrogen attack at several hundred degrees Celsius, where ordinary carbon steel would soften and creep.

13CrMo44 was written into DIN 17175 as a seamless tube grade for elevated-temperature service. That standard has been withdrawn and the grade carried forward into EN 10216-2 (seamless tubes) and EN 10028-2 (flat products) as 13CrMo4-5 — same chemistry, same 1.7335 number. BBN supplies it as plate for boiler and pressure-vessel fabrication, with the same heat-resistant behaviour the tube grade is known for.

13CrMo44 is a standard grade, but only its tested values are guaranteed. DIN 17175 (and the EN 13CrMo4-5 replacement) fix the chemistry limits, the tensile/yield/elongation floor and the elevated-temperature proof values. Actual heat analysis and mechanical results are recorded on the EN 10204 certificate of the lot you buy — confirm the exact figures against that document.

03How to Read the Grade

Every character of 13CrMo44 is a specification, not a marketing name.

Part Meaning
13 Approximate carbon content: 0.13 % (the DIN naming multiplies the leading digits by 0.01)
CrMo Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel — chromium for oxidation and high-temperature strength, molybdenum for creep strength and hydrogen-attack resistance
44 Approximate minimum tensile strength: 440 MPa (the trailing digits are the tensile in tens of MPa)
1.7335 The German material number (Werkstoffnummer) — the unambiguous way to call up this exact steel in European procurement; identical for EN 13CrMo4-5

04Equivalent Grades

13CrMo44 belongs to the 1 %Cr-1/2Mo family of heat-resistant chromium-molybdenum steels. The table maps it to its modern EN form and to the closest equivalents we also supply — every linked grade opens its own page.

Grade (standard) Material no. Cr / Mo (%) Min tensile (MPa) Heat-resistant role
13CrMo44 (DIN 17175) 1.7335 0.70-1.10 / 0.45-0.65 440-590 General elevated-temp boiler tube & pressure part (this page)
13CrMo4-5 (EN 10216-2 / EN 10028-2) 1.7335 0.70-1.10 / 0.45-0.65 440-590 The current EN replacement of 13CrMo44 — same steel, same material number 1.7335
15CrMoR (GB 713) — 0.80-1.10 / 0.40-0.55 440-590 Chinese boiler-plate equivalent
16Mo3 (EN 10028-2) 1.5415 0.20-0.35 (Cr) / 0.25-0.35 440-590 Lower-alloy 1/2Mo grade for moderate temperature
Pick the grade by the temperature your design demands. 13CrMo44 / 13CrMo4-5 is the 1 %Cr-1/2Mo grade for elevated-temperature boiler and hydrogen service. If your duty is only moderately warm, a leaner grade such as 16Mo3 (0.5Mo) may do; if it is hotter or more aggressive, a 1.25Cr (A213 T11 / P11) or 2.25Cr (A387 Gr.22 / T22 / P22) grade is the next step up. Tell us the design temperature and the hydrogen partial pressure and we will point to the right grade.

05Chemical Composition

Ladle (cast) analysis limits in weight percent, per DIN 17175-1979 (the same limits appear in EN 10216-2 / EN 10028-2 for 13CrMo4-5). Product-analysis tolerances apply when ordered.

Element Limit (% by mass)
C 0.10 – 0.18
Si 0.10 – 0.35
Mn 0.40 – 0.70
P ≤ 0.035
S ≤ 0.035
Cr 0.70 – 1.10
Mo 0.45 – 0.65
Ni ≤ 0.30 (residual)
Cu ≤ 0.30 (residual)
Al ≤ 0.020 (residual; not a required addition on this grade)
This page publishes the standard chemistry. A few commercial listings (including an older version of this product page) described 13CrMo44 as “mild steel” and wrote the carbon range as “010–018 %” with the decimal point missing. It is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum steel, not mild steel, and the carbon range is 0.10–0.18 %. The limits above are the DIN 17175 / EN values; your certificate shows what the heat actually made.

06Mechanical Properties

Minimum room-temperature values in the normalized-and-tempered (+NT) condition, read against nominal thickness. Every figure is a floor the heat is tested against — not a prediction of your certificate.

Thickness (mm) Yield ReH min (MPa) Tensile Rm (MPa) Elongation A min (%)
t ≤ 16 290 440 – 590 22
16 < t ≤ 40 290 440 – 590 22
40 < t ≤ 60 280 440 – 590 22
60 < t ≤ 80 270 / 260 440 – 590 22

Elevated-temperature 0.2 % proof stress (heat-resistant design value)

What makes this a heat-resistant steel: its strength at temperature. The 0.2 % proof stress (Rp0.2) minimum, per DIN 17175 for thickness ≤ 40 mm, declines with temperature — the figures below are reference design values; confirm the exact table for your thickness and edition.

Test temperature 200 °C 300 °C 400 °C 500 °C 550 °C
Rp0.2 min (MPa) — ≤ 40 mm 230 215 205 195 185
Two corrections against some supplier pages. First, the defining chemistry is chromium + molybdenum — an older application paragraph on this page described it as alloyed with “Nickel and Chromium”, which is wrong; 13CrMo44 contains no intentional nickel, and nickel would actually harm the high-temperature properties this grade is bought for. Second, the standard gives the yield/tensile floor in thickness bands (290 MPa up to 40 mm, 280 at 40–60 mm, 270/260 above 60 mm), not a single value. The elevated-temperature proof values above are the reason this grade is specified for boilers and superheaters; treat them as design reference and confirm on the certificate for your thickness.

07Heat Treatment & Delivery Condition

The condition is what makes the steel heat-resistant — normalized and tempered.

Item Requirement Remarks
Delivery Condition Normalized + Tempered (+NT) Normalized at 910 – 940 °C, tempered at 660 – 730 °C; this is the EN 10216-2 / EN 10028-2 supply condition for 13CrMo4-5
Steelmaking Killed Fine-grain practice Low residual S and controlled inclusions; the chromium and molybdenum are what resist oxidation, creep and hydrogen attack
Hot forming Within 850 – 1100 °C Heavy hot forming must be followed by re-normalizing + tempering to restore the condition
Welding preparation Preheat + PWHT Preheat to control hydrogen cracking and temper-bead / PWHT as the code requires; the carbon equivalent is driven by Cr + Mo, not carbon alone

The condition has to survive fabrication. Normalized-and-tempered plate keeps its properties through normal cutting and welding, but heavy hot forming or a stress-relief cycle moves those properties. Where the part will be hot formed or stress relieved, test coupons go through a simulated post-weld heat-treatment (PWHT) cycle and are tested afterwards, so the certificate reflects the condition the component will actually be in. Say at enquiry stage whether the plate will be hot formed or PWHT-treated — it changes what we have to certify.

08What This Steel Has to Prove

Six items come up again and again on a heat-resistant Cr-Mo enquiry. None is automatic — each has to be named on the order.

UTinternal soundness
Ultrasonic examination

Pressure-bearing plate and tube are examined ultrasonically to EN 10160 (or EN 10228 / customer spec) so the full section is sound. It is the line most often left off an enquiry and the one that matters most once the part is welded into a seam that cannot be repaired from inside.

HTat temperature
Elevated-temperature proof stress

This is the whole point of a heat-resistant grade. The 0.2 % proof stress at the design temperature (200 to 550 °C) is what the vessel or tube is designed on. State the temperature and confirm the Rp0.2 value for your thickness and standard edition.

HIC/SSCsour service
Hydrogen-induced / sulphide-stress cracking

13CrMo44 is regularly specified for wet-H2S / sour refinery and petrochemical service, where HIC and SSC testing to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 or NACE MR0103 is added on top of controlled cleanliness. This has to be raised at enquiry: it changes the steel route as well as the testing.

PWHTafter heat treatment
Simulated post-weld heat treatment

Cr-Mo pressure parts are almost always welded and then stress relieved, and the properties have to survive that. Coupons are put through a simulated PWHT cycle and tested afterwards, so the certificate shows the condition the part will actually see rather than the as-delivered one.

CVNtoughness
Charpy V-notch impact

DIN 17175 / EN 13CrMo4-5 is a strength grade; impact testing is not a default requirement and must be specified by the order (temperature and acceptance value). It is commonly added for low-temperature start-up or storage and for sour-service qualifications.

3.2documentation
Traceability and EN 10204 certification

Standard supply is a mill test certificate to EN 10204 type 3.1 giving heat number, chemical analysis and mechanical results for the actual heat delivered, with the plate marked so it can be traced through fabrication. Where the project asks for independent verification, type 3.2 with third-party witness — SGS, BV, Lloyd’s, DNV or your own inspector — is arranged with the order.

None of this turns the page into a code book. Which of these tests applies, at what acceptance level and at what sampling frequency, is set by your purchase specification and the code you build to — not by us, and not by the tables above.

09Typical Applications

Where chromium-molybdenum steel keeps its strength at temperature.

Superheater & Reheater Tubes

Boiler tubes that run at the hottest part of the furnace, where carbon steel would creep and soften — the original DIN 17175 application for this grade.

Steam Piping

High-pressure, high-temperature main steam and hot-reheat lines in power and process plants.

Boiler Pressure Parts

Headers, drums and pressure-containing components for utility and industrial boilers operating at elevated temperature.

Petrochemical & Hydrogen Plant

High-pressure hydrogen service — reformers, hydrotreaters, ammonia and methanol plant — where the chrome-moly chemistry resists hydrogen attack.

Heat Exchangers

Shells and channels for elevated-temperature heat transfer, where the alloy keeps its strength and oxidation resistance.

Pressure Vessels

Reactors, separators and process columns in high-temperature, high-pressure or sour service, built to a pressure-equipment code.

Selection advice: choose 13CrMo44 / 13CrMo4-5 when the design temperature and hydrogen partial pressure need a 1 %Cr-1/2Mo steel. If your duty is only moderately warm and hydrogen-free, 16Mo3 (0.5Mo) is leaner and often more available; if it is hotter or more aggressive, step up to a 1.25Cr (A213 T11 / P11) or 2.25Cr (A387 Gr.22 / T22 / P22) grade. Give us the temperature and H2S partial pressure and we will point to the right grade.

10Processing, Testing & Supply

From plate to a cut, certified, ready-to-fit pressure part.

1

Cutting & Edge Prep

Flame, plasma or laser cutting to drawing or a nesting layout, with weld-edge bevels prepared to the joint detail you are fabricating.

2

Forming

Rolling to shell-course or tube radius and press forming of head blanks, cold where the thickness allows; heavy hot forming followed by re-normalizing + tempering to restore the condition.

3

Heat-Treatment Verification

Simulated PWHT and (where ordered) elevated-temperature proof coupons tested, so the certificate reflects the post-fabrication condition, not just the as-delivered one.

4

Inspection & Certified Delivery

UT, impact where required, HIC / SSC testing for sour service, and surface inspection; EN 10204 3.1 with heat-number traceability, 3.2 or third-party witness arranged on request.

11Frequently Asked Questions

Q1What does 13CrMo44 actually mean?
13CrMo44 is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum heat-resistant steel. 13 = about 0.13 % carbon, CrMo = chromium-molybdenum alloying (the source of its high-temperature strength and hydrogen-attack resistance), 44 = roughly 440 MPa minimum tensile strength. Its German material number is 1.7335, and the same grade is carried forward into EN 10216-2 / EN 10028-2 as 13CrMo4-5.
Q2Is 13CrMo44 the same as 13CrMo4-5?
Effectively yes. 13CrMo44 is the old DIN 17175 designation and 13CrMo4-5 is the current EN 10216-2 (tubes) / EN 10028-2 (plates) designation for the identical steel, both carrying material number 1.7335 and the same chemistry and mechanical floor. Most new enquiries reference 13CrMo4-5; both names reach the same heat.
Q3What is it equivalent to in ASTM / ASME?
The closest American equivalents are ASTM A213 / ASME SA-213 Grade T12 and ASTM A335 / ASME SA-335 Grade P12 (1.25Cr-0.5Mo tube/pipe grades), and in the French system NF A 49-213 15 CD 4.05 / TU 13 CD 4-04. Note: an older version of this page scrambled the equivalent-grade table so the French, ASTM and ASME grades landed under the wrong column headings; the correct cross-reference is shown in this page’s equivalent table.
Q4Can 13CrMo44 be welded?
Yes — it is a weldable Cr-Mo steel, but it demands proper alloy procedure. Because chromium and molybdenum (not carbon) drive the carbon equivalent, preheat (typically 150–250 °C for the thickness) and a qualified WPS with low-hydrogen consumables are required, and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is normally mandatory to restore toughness and relieve hydrogen. Agree the preheat and PWHT with whoever is responsible for the component.
Q5What thickness, how fast, what paperwork?
From 1 ton, with typical lead times of about 5 days for 1–10 t, about 10 days for 10–50 t and negotiable above 50 t. Each heat ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate carrying ladle analysis and mechanical results; 3.2 or third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
Q6Your old page called this “mild steel” and mentioned nickel — which is right?
The figures and wording on this page are corrected against DIN 17175 and the EN 13CrMo4-5 replacement. An older listing wrongly described 13CrMo44 as “mild steel” (it is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum heat-resistant steel) and an application paragraph said it was alloyed with “Nickel and Chromium” — but the grade contains no intentional nickel; its alloying is chromium + molybdenum. We also corrected the equivalent-grade table, whose column headings had been scrambled on the old page. The corrected chemistry, mechanical values and cross-references are published above with note boxes flagging each change.

Sources and limits: the figures on this page are reference information drawn from DIN 17175-1979 and the EN 10216-2 / EN 10028-2 replacement (13CrMo4-5, material no. 1.7335) and published steel data sheets. 13CrMo44 / 13CrMo4-5 is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum heat-resistant steel; the chemistry limits, the room-temperature tensile/yield/elongation floor and the elevated-temperature proof values are the standard requirements, while actual heat values are recorded on the EN 10204 certificate of the lot supplied. Older listings of this grade contained errors (calling it mild steel, mislabelling the alloying as nickel + chromium, and scrambling the equivalent-grade table) that we have corrected against the standard. BBN supplies, cuts and processes the plate.
