01Product Overview & Specifications
EN 10025-5 S355J2WP is a hot rolled structural steel with an anti-corrosion feature, also called weathering steel and atmosphere corrosion resistance steel. It is specified in EN 10025-5, the European standard for structural steels with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.
Under normal atmospheric exposure the steel forms a stable dark brown oxide coating which inhibits deeper penetration. Because that patina protects the base metal, S355J2WP saves the cost of painting and the costly rust-prevention maintenance that ordinary carbon steel requires over the years — which is why it is chosen for exposed architecture, bridges, smoke stacks and sculpture.

Note: Phosphorus is intentionally higher than in ordinary structural steel (0.06–0.15%). Together with copper and chromium it improves atmospheric corrosion resistance — a defining feature of weathering steels, and the reason for the P in the S355J2WP designation. Vanadium shows no value in the supplied composition table; if your project sets a V limit, confirm it against the EN 10025-5 requirement and the MTC.

Q1What does the S355J2WP designation actually mean?
S = structural steel, 355 = the specified minimum yield strength in MPa for the thinnest bracket, J2 = 27 J impact energy at −20 °C, W = weathering (improved atmospheric corrosion resistance), P = the phosphorus-alloyed grade class. Read together it is a 355 MPa weathering structural steel with −20 °C toughness.
Q2How is S355J2WP different from ordinary S355 structural steel?
Both carry the same 355 MPa yield level, but S355J2WP is made to EN 10025-5 with added copper and chromium plus a controlled higher phosphorus content. That alloying produces the self-protecting dark brown patina, so the steel resists atmospheric corrosion instead of needing a paint system.
