BP500 is a high-grade, ultra-high hardness ballistic armor steel developed by Baosteel, upgraded based on BP440 protection level. As a core high-performance grade in the BP series, BP500 features higher Brinell hardness, ultra-high tensile strength and premium ballistic resistance. Different from conventional low-hardness protective steel, BP500 balances extreme anti-ballistic capability and excellent weldability, solving the welding difficulty of traditional high-hardness armor steel. It is widely used for high-standard security protection, armored vehicles and marine lightweight defense structures.

Production Process & Quality Inspection Standard
BP500 is ultra-clean killed steel produced by oxygen converter or electric furnace smelting + external refining, with extremely low impurity content and uniform internal metallographic structure, ensuring consistent batch ballistic performance.
1. Complete Process Route: Smelting → External refining → Continuous casting → Controlled rolling & controlled cooling hot rolling → Powerful straightening & plate cutting → Professional heat treatment
2. Delivery State: Available in controlled rolling, quenched, quenched & tempered (Q+T) states to meet different protection and machining requirements.
3. Strict Quality Control
Brinell hardness tested batch by batch in accordance with EN 6506 standard
Charpy impact test implemented for thickness over 4mm per batch
Ballistic performance guaranteed by contract, official shooting test verification reports are available
Machining & Processing Suggestions
1. Cutting: Water jet cutting is highly recommended to fully retain original ballistic performance of cutting edges. Laser cutting and plasma cutting are also applicable for efficient processing.
2. Machining: Due to ultra-high hardness, HSS-E / HSS-Co high-performance drill bits are recommended for drilling. Cemented carbide coated tools are preferred for milling to improve processing efficiency and surface quality.
3. Hot Working: Secondary hot processing is not recommended. If heat treatment adjustment is required, technical confirmation with Baosteel R&D team is mandatory.
4. Value-Added Pre-processing: UT ultrasonic testing, Z-direction performance (Z15/Z25/Z35), SGS third-party inspection, shot blasting and priming pretreatment are available before delivery.
