Product Introduction

01Product Overview

S355N vs PLAIN CARBON SAME JOB, FINER GRAIN, TOUGHER S355JR (as-rolled) < S355N 355 MPa MIN YIELD Normalizing refines the grain -20°C impact guaranteed (the 'N') Fine-grain: same yield, more homogeneous & tougher

EN 10025-3 S355N is a normalized / normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steel — a 355 MPa-yield European grade that is not plain carbon, despite the “non-alloy” label some listings (including the original page for this grade) attach to it. Its name is a specification: S is structural steel, 355 is the minimum yield strength in MPa (up to 16 mm), N is the normalized or normalized-rolled delivery condition, and the material number is 1.0545. It belongs to EN 10025-3, the part of the European structural-steel standard that covers normalized fine-grain steels — grades engineered for improved toughness through a refined grain structure.

S355N is supplied as plate, sheet, section and bar for welded and bolted structures — bridges, buildings, cranes and lifting equipment, offshore and marine structures, wind-turbine towers, heavy machinery and transport. The “N” matters: normalizing (or normalized rolling) refines the grain, homogenizes properties through the thickness and gives the steel a guaranteed Charpy V-notch impact of −20 °C, ≥ 27 J (longitudinal). Strength comes from a low carbon content plus grain-refining and micro-alloying additions (Nb, V, Ti and aluminium), so it stays readily weldable. One point to keep straight: S355N is not the “normalized version of S355JR” — it shares the 355 MPa yield but is a different, fine-grain specification in a different part of EN 10025.

Two things worth clearing up about this table. First, S355N is a fine-grain (micro-alloyed) weldable structural steel, not plain carbon — the original page for this grade called it “non-alloy structural steel”, which is imprecise. Its toughness and homogeneity come from normalizing plus Nb/V/Ti/Al grain refinement, so it carries alloying limits a plain-carbon S355JR does not. Second, the rolling range (6–300 mm × 1 500–4 020 mm × 3 000–18 000 mm) is the mill’s published rolling envelope; the EN 10025-3 property tables run to 250 mm. Confirm the exact thickness you need against the certificate.

03How to Read the Grade

Every part of S355N is a specification, not a marketing name.

Part Meaning
S Structural steel — the European convention for structural-steel grades.
355 The specified minimum yield strength in MPa (up to 16 mm). As with all EN 10025 grades, the first number is a yield value, not a tensile one.
N Normalized or normalized-rolled delivery condition — the defining feature of S355N. Normalizing refines the grain and guarantees −20 °C impact toughness. (EN 10025-4 adds M = thermomechanical, NL = normalized with −50 °C impact.)
1.0545 The European material number (Werkstoffnummer) for S355N — use it on drawings and certificates to remove any ambiguity about which grade is meant.
EN 10025-3 Part 3 of the European structural-steel standard — normalized/normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steels. It is distinct from EN 10025-2 (general S355JR/J0/J2/K2) and EN 10025-4 (TMCP / normalized-low-temperature grades).

The S355 toughness ladder at the 355 MPa level — the letter/temperature is what changes.

Grade Standard Condition Impact test
S355JR EN 10025-2 As-rolled +20 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355J0 EN 10025-2 As-rolled 0 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355J2 EN 10025-2 As-rolled -20 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355N (this page) EN 10025-3 Normalized / norm.-rolled -20 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355NL EN 10025-4 Normalized (low-temp) -50 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355M EN 10025-4 TMCP -20 °C, ≥ 27 J
Pick by the coldest service temperature and the delivery condition. At the 355 MPa level, S355N is the normalized fine-grain option — better homogeneity and a guaranteed −20 °C toughness than an as-rolled S355JR (+20 °C). For the same −20 °C impact but without the normalization, specify S355J2 (as-rolled); for −50 °C, step up to S355NL. The yield, tensile and thickness brackets are the same across these — only the impact temperature, the condition and the grain refinement differ.

04Equivalent Grades

S355N is the 355 MPa yield level of the European fine-grain structural family. The table maps it to its closest grades — a similar yield figure is not a licence to substitute; check chemistry, toughness, condition and thickness brackets before swapping. Linked grades open their own page.

Standard Grade Min. Yield What to check before substituting
EN 10025-3 (this page) S355N 355 MPa The European normalized fine-grain grade — -20 °C, ≥ 27 J, material 1.0545 (this page)
EN 10025-2 S355JR 355 MPa Same yield, but as-rolled with only +20 °C impact. S355N is the tougher, normalized alternative — do not treat them as interchangeable where cold toughness matters.
EN 10025-2 S355J2 355 MPa Same -20 °C / 27 J impact as S355N, but as-rolled rather than normalized. Closest match on impact; S355N adds grain refinement and homogeneity.
EN 10025-2 S355J0 355 MPa As-rolled, 0 °C impact — in between JR and J2. Dedicated page not published on this site; cited for the toughness ladder.
EN 10025-4 S355NL 355 MPa The normalized low-temperature cousin — -50 °C, ≥ 27 J. The right choice for Arctic / severe-cold service. Dedicated page not published here; named for cross-reference.
EN 10025-4 S355M 355 MPa Thermomechanical-rolled equivalent of S355N — finer grain, cheaper welding, same -20 °C impact. Dedicated page not published here.
EN 10025-3 S275N 275 MPa The 275 MPa step in the same fine-grain family — 80 MPa below S355N. Dedicated page not published here.
EN 10025-3 S420N 420 MPa The 420 MPa step above S355N in the same fine-grain family. Dedicated page not published here.
ASTM A572 / A572M Grade 50 345 MPa The closest US grade by yield (345 MPa, ~10 MPa below S355N). Confirm impact — A572 does not mandate the −20 °C test unless specified as a supplementary requirement.
GB/T 1591 Q355D / Q355ND 355 MPa The Chinese 355 MPa grade with -20 °C impact — a near equivalent for Chinese-spec projects. Dedicated page not published here.
DIN (legacy) StE 355 / TStE 355 355 MPa The old German designations for normalized / normalized-low-temperature fine-grain 355 MPa steel — S355N is the EN successor. Named for cross-reference.
JIS G3106 SM490 (SM490YA / YB) 325 MPa (tensile-based) Japanese SM number is a tensile value (490 MPa), not a yield value; SM490 yield is ~325 MPa. Not a true 355 MPa yield match; named only for cross-reference.
Strength proximity is not interchangeability. Chemistry limits, toughness classes, delivery conditions and thickness brackets all differ between these standards, and a substitution must be signed off by the designer against the governing code. Two traps to name: EN 10025-2 has no normalized fine-grain grade — the European normalized match for S355N is S355N itself, and the as-rolled siblings are S355JR (weaker on cold toughness) and S355J2 (same impact, not normalized); and the frequently cited lower grades are below S355N. Where a US project needs the closest band, specify A572 Grade 50 (345 MPa) and add the −20 °C impact as a supplementary requirement, since A572 does not mandate it.

05Chemical Composition

Ladle (cast) and product-analysis limits in weight percent, per EN 10025-3:2019 Table 2 for S355N. The original product sheet for this grade listed only C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Ni, Cu and V, with a fixed single C value of 0.16 and too-narrow Mn of 0.80–1.25, and omitted the defining grain-refining elements — the table below is the full EN 10025-3 set.

Element Ladle analysis (max %) Product analysis (max %)
Carbon, C ≤ 0.20 ≤ 0.22
Silicon, Si ≤ 0.50 ≤ 0.55
Manganese, Mn 0.90 – 1.65 0.85 – 1.75
Phosphorus, P ≤ 0.030 ≤ 0.035
Sulphur, S ≤ 0.025 ≤ 0.030
Nitrogen, N ≤ 0.015 ≤ 0.017
Aluminium (total), Al ≥ 0.020 ≥ 0.015
Niobium, Nb ≤ 0.05 ≤ 0.06
Vanadium, V ≤ 0.12 ≤ 0.14
Titanium, Ti ≤ 0.05 ≤ 0.06
Chromium, Cr ≤ 0.30 ≤ 0.35
Nickel, Ni ≤ 0.50 ≤ 0.55
Molybdenum, Mo ≤ 0.10 ≤ 0.13
Copper, Cu ≤ 0.55 ≤ 0.60
Read the certificate against this table, not against a one-line data sheet. S355N is a fine-grain steel — the Al ≥ 0.020 % (total) and the Nb / V / Ti limits are what deliver the refined grain and the 355 MPa yield without raising carbon, and they appear on the MTC. Two notes: the carbon is a maximum of 0.20 % (not a fixed 0.16 % as the old sheet stated), and manganese runs 0.90–1.65 % in the ladle (the old 0.80–1.25 % was too narrow). Carbon equivalent CEV = C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15 is limited to ≤ 0.43 % up to 63 mm and ≤ 0.45 % above 63 mm, which keeps the steel readily weldable.

06Mechanical Properties

Minimum room-temperature values, read against nominal thickness, per EN 10025-3. The original sheet for this grade showed a single line (355 / 470-630 / 20 %) — which understated elongation (it is 22 %, not 20 %) and omitted the thickness ladder and the impact line. Every figure is a floor the heat is tested against, not a prediction of your certificate.

Thickness (mm) Yield ReH min (MPa) Tensile Rm (MPa)
≤ 16 355 470 – 630
> 16 – 40 345 470 – 630
> 40 – 63 335 470 – 630
> 63 – 80 325 470 – 630
> 80 – 100 315 470 – 630
> 100 – 150 295 450 – 610
> 150 – 200 285 450 – 610
> 200 – 250 265 450 – 610

Elongation & impact — the properties the old page omitted or understated.

Property Requirement
Elongation A (longitudinal) ≥ 22 % up to 63 mm; ≥ 21 % above 63 mm (the old sheet stated 20 %, which is low)
Charpy V-notch, longitudinal -20 °C, ≥ 27 J (the S355N requirement)
Three corrections / completions against the old page. First, the yield is given in thickness bands (355 MPa up to 16 mm, stepping down to 265 MPa at 200–250 mm) — EN 10025-3 publishes eight brackets, and the tensile band shifts from 470–630 MPa (up to 100 mm) to 450–610 MPa (above 100 mm). Second, elongation is ≥ 22 % (not the 20 % on the old sheet) and is confirmed against the thickness. Third, the impact is a guaranteed -20 °C / ≥ 27 J — this is the “N” grade’s defining property. A note on the 40 J figure sometimes quoted for S355N: that value belongs to S355K2 (EN 10025-2, -20 °C / 40 J) and S355NL (EN 10025-4, -50 °C / 27 J), not to S355N, which specifies 27 J at -20 °C.

07Delivery Condition, Heat Treatment & Additional Requirements

S355N is supplied normalized or normalized-rolled; the order, not the grade, fixes the rest.

Item Options
Delivery Condition N — Normalized (usual) Normalized-rolled TMCP available
Additional Conditions UT Charpy V-notch Z15 / Z25 / Z35 Third-party test (SGS) Coated or shot blasted and painting
Surface Treatment As rolled Shot blasted Primed Painted

What the specification sets, and what has to be added by the order.

Item Status in EN 10025-3 How it is obtained
Delivery condition Normalized or normalized-rolled as standard TMCP can be agreed where a finer grain and lower CEV are wanted; the “N” designation stays correct for normalized supply.
Heat treatment Normalizing is the defined condition Strength and toughness come from the normalized fine grain plus micro-alloying; re-normalizing is an agreed add-on, not a default.
Impact toughness -20 °C / ≥ 27 J at the “N” grade Built into the grade; third-party witnessed impact on request.
Ultrasonic testing Not specified EN 10160 at an agreed acceptance level, by agreement.
Through-thickness (Z) properties Not specified Z15 / Z25 / Z35 by agreement where the joint pulls through the plate thickness.
Third-party inspection Not specified SGS, BV, TUV or Intertek at the mill before shipment.
Certificate MTC per the specification EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 with third-party endorsement on request.
Keep the condition and the standard in the enquiry. S355N is normally delivered normalized (or normalized-rolled) and tested per heat; anything beyond that — TMCP, UT, Z-direction, third-party inspection — has to be written into the order before rolling, not added afterwards. Because the grade name already carries the condition (the “N”), just name the standard (EN 10025-3) and the material number 1.0545 — the certificate reads S355N either way.

08Typical Applications

Where a fine-grain 355 MPa structural steel carries the load.

Bridges & Infrastructure

Bridge main girders, built-up sections and splice plates — the guaranteed -20 °C impact and the homogeneous fine grain make S355N a natural choice for outdoor and cold-climate heavy construction.

Cranes & Lifting Equipment

Crane jibs, boom sections and lattice members — applications where -20 °C impact tolerance matters because the structure sees repeated dynamic and lifting loads.

Offshore & Marine

Offshore platform structures, marine and port equipment — fine-grain, weldable 355 MPa plate for structural members in damp, dynamic or cold environments.

Wind & Power Generation

Wind-turbine tower sections, nacelle supports and power-plant structures — the normalized fine grain gives the fatigue and toughness behaviour tall, welded towers need.

Heavy Machinery & Transport

Construction and mining machinery frames, engineering-vehicle chassis and rail/transport structures — strength with weldability and cold-toughness for mobile and dynamic duty.

Why specify S355N rather than S355JR: it gives the same 355 MPa yield but adds a refined, normalized grain that is more homogeneous through the thickness and carries a guaranteed -20 °C impact (35 °C colder than S355JR’s +20 °C). What it does not give you is weathering (atmospheric-corrosion) resistance — that is a different specification — or a higher yield; for 420 / 460 MPa at the same fine-grain level, step up to S420N / S460N.

09Processing, Testing & Supply

From mill plate to a cut, certified, ready-to-fit structural item.

1

Cutting & Profiling

Plate and sheet cut to length and width, profiled to drawing and bevelled for weld preparation on flame, plasma or laser equipment.

2

Forming, Bending & Welding

Bending and rolling to radius, cold forming to the radius the thickness allows, plus welded assemblies built under a qualified procedure — S355N welds with ordinary consumables; preheat 100–150 °C is advised for thicker or highly restrained joints to avoid hydrogen cracking.

3

Surface Treatment

Shot blasting to remove mill scale, then shop primer or full paint system, followed by export marking and seaworthy packing.

4

MOQ is 1 t.

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1What does EN 10025-3 S355N actually mean?
S355N is a European normalized/normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steel. S is structural, 355 is the minimum yield in MPa, and N is the normalized delivery condition that guarantees a Charpy V-notch impact of -20 °C, ≥ 27 J (longitudinal). The material number is 1.0545, and the standard is EN 10025-3 (Part 3: normalized fine-grain structural steels), distinct from EN 10025-2 (S355JR/J0/J2/K2) and EN 10025-4 (S355M/NL).
Q2Is S355N a non-alloy / plain carbon steel?
No — despite the “non-alloy structural steel” label on the original page for this grade, S355N is a fine-grain (micro-alloyed) weldable structural steel per EN 10025-3 Part 3. Its toughness and homogeneity come from normalizing plus grain-refining and micro-alloying additions (Nb, V, Ti and aluminium), so it carries alloying limits a plain-carbon S355JR does not. It is heavier in manganese and carries specified Al/Nb/V/Ti, Cr, Ni, Mo and Cu limits. The site category “Carbon and Low-alloy Steel” is kept for navigation.
Q3What is S355N equivalent to in EN / ASTM / JIS / GB?
At 355 MPa, the closest as-rolled European siblings are EN 10025-2 S355JR (+20 °C, weaker cold toughness) and S355J2 (same -20 °C / 27 J, but as-rolled rather than normalized); for -50 °C step up to S355NL (EN 10025-4). In the US the closest is ASTM A572 Grade 50 (345 MPa) — add the -20 °C impact as a supplementary requirement since A572 does not mandate it. In China the near match is Q355D / Q355ND (355 MPa, -20 °C). The old Japanese SM490 grades are tensile-based (~325 MPa yield) and are not true 355 MPa yield equivalents. All are procurement mappings; confirm against your governing code.
Q4Is the impact value 27 J or 40 J at -20 °C?
EN 10025-3 specifies 27 J at -20 °C for S355N. The 40 J figure sometimes quoted belongs to S355K2 (EN 10025-2, -20 °C / 40 J) and is sometimes loosely attached to S355NL — not to S355N. If your design genuinely needs 40 J at -20 °C, specify S355K2 (as-rolled) or S355NL (normalized, -50 °C); for 27 J at -20 °C, S355N is correct and is also available as the as-rolled S355J2.
Q5Can I substitute S355JR, S355J2, A572 Gr.50 or SM490 for S355N?
Only with the designer’s sign-off against the governing code. S355J2 is the closest on impact (same -20 °C / 27 J, but as-rolled); S355JR is 35 °C weaker on cold toughness (+20 °C). A572 Gr.50 is ~10 MPa below in yield and does not mandate the impact. SM490 is tensile-based (~325 MPa yield) and not a true match. S355N’s edge is the normalized fine grain — better homogeneity and a guaranteed -20 °C impact that as-rolled grades may not carry.
Q6How thick, how fast, what paperwork, and is the old page’s data right?
From 1 t, with typical lead times of about 5 days for 1–10 t, about 10 days for 10–50 t and negotiable above 50 t. Each heat ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate. The figures on this page correct / complete the older listing for this grade: S355N is a fine-grain weldable structural steel (not “non-alloy”), the chemical table now carries the full EN 10025-3 set including the defining Al/Nb/V/Ti and the correct C ≤ 0.20 % and Mn 0.90–1.65 % (the old sheet wrote a fixed 0.16 % and too-narrow 0.80–1.25 %), the mechanical table keeps the eight correct thickness brackets and now adds the elongation (≥ 22 %, not 20 %) and the -20 °C / ≥ 27 J impact the old sheet omitted, and we publish the key toughness fact — S355N is 27 J at -20 °C (40 J belongs to S355K2 / S355NL, not S355N). Each change is flagged in a note box above.
Sources and limits: the figures on this page are reference information drawn from EN 10025-3:2019 (S355N, material number 1.0545) and published steel data sheets. S355N is a normalized/normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steel; the chemistry limits and the tensile / yield / elongation / -20 °C / 27 J impact floors are the standard requirements, while actual heat values are recorded on the EN 10204 certificate of the lot supplied. The original listing for this grade called it “non-alloy structural steel”, wrote a fixed carbon of 0.16 % and too-narrow manganese, omitted the defining Al/Nb/V/Ti grain-refining elements and the residual limits, and stated elongation as 20 % with no thickness ladder and no impact line — we have corrected those against the standard: S355N is a fine-grain steel, carbon is ≤ 0.20 % and manganese 0.90–1.65 %, elongation is ≥ 22 %, and the impact is 27 J at -20 °C (40 J belongs to S355K2 / S355NL, not S355N). BBN supplies, cuts and processes the plate.
