Product Introduction

01Product Overview

MIN YIELD vs THICKNESS SM570, MPa 460 450 430 420 ≤16 16-40 40-75 75-100

JIS G3106 SM570 is the highest strength grade of JIS G3106, Rolled steels for welded structure. The number in the grade name is the specified minimum tensile strength — 570 MPa, inside a tensile band of 570 – 720 MPa — with a minimum yield of 460 MPa on thin plate. It is the grade buyers move to when SM490 and SM520 can no longer carry the load and the section still has to be welded.

SM570 gets there through controlled rolling (TMCP) and micro-alloying rather than through carbon, which is exactly why the carbon equivalent stays at 0.44 / 0.47 and the plate remains weldable under normal procedure control. BBN supplies SM570 plate cut to size, tested per heat and certified on the mill test certificate.

How to read this page: every value below is a JIS G3106 requirement — a minimum or a specified limit, not a typical mill result — and most of them move with thickness. What is actually delivered is what appears on the MTC of the heat you buy, so always quote thickness, delivery condition and any extra testing together in the enquiry.

Dimensional tolerances follow JIS G3106 and the agreed order specification.

03Grade Designation

What each part of the name SM570 tells a buyer.

Element Meaning
SM Series symbol of JIS G3106 for rolled steels intended for welded structures — plate, sheet and strip that will be welded into bridges, buildings, vehicles and machinery.
570 Specified minimum tensile strength: 570 N/mm2 (MPa). The standard sets the band at 570 – 720 MPa, so the number is the floor of the band, not a target.
No suffix letter SM570 carries no A / B / C quality suffix. Unlike SM400A to SM400C or SM520B / SM520C, where the suffix decides whether an impact test applies, SM570 is a single grade that carries its own toughness requirement.

Where SM570 sits inside the JIS G3106 family.

04Equivalent Grades

The cross-references published with this product, for matching a drawing that names another standard.

Standard Designation Remarks
EN 10028-3 P 460 N Weldable fine grain steel, normalized — pressure-purpose specification
DIN 17102 St E 460 Older German designation, still found on legacy drawings
NFA 36201 E 460 R French designation
BS 4360 55 C, EE British designation
Equivalence is a starting point, not a substitution permit. The grades above are matched on strength level; their impact temperature and energy, delivery condition, thickness range and testing regime are set by their own standards and are not identical to JIS G3106. Buyers working to strength level also ask for EN 10025-4 S460M and ASTM A572 Gr.65 — both are different specifications with their own rules. If a drawing names a grade, supply that grade or obtain a formal deviation; always re-check impact, Ceq and delivery condition before accepting a replacement.

05Chemical Composition & Carbon Equivalent

Ladle analysis limits for SM570, plate thickness up to 100 mm.

Element Max. % by Mass
Carbon (C) 0.18
Silicon (Si) 0.55
Manganese (Mn) 1.70
Phosphorus (P) 0.035
Sulfur (S) 0.035

Carbon equivalent: Ceq ≤ 0.44 for t ≤ 50 mm  ·  Ceq ≤ 0.47 for 50 mm < t ≤ 100 mm
Ceq(%) = C + Mn/6 + Si/24 + Ni/40 + Cr/5 + Mo/4 + V/14

Two things to check before you order. First, published renderings of the JIS G3106 table differ slightly at the edges: carbon is quoted as 0.18 % in some and 0.19 – 0.20 % in others, and manganese as 1.60 % or 1.70 % — our older product sheet carried 0.20 % C and 1.60 % Mn. Second, not every mill uses the same carbon equivalent formula: alongside the JIS formula above, some report Ceq = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15. State which formula applies in the purchase order so the value on the MTC can be compared like for like. Micro-alloying elements (Nb, V, Ti) and residual elements are not published on this page; if your specification controls them, write the limits into the order.

06Mechanical Properties

Tensile requirements of JIS G3106 for SM570, by plate thickness.

Thickness t (mm) Min. Yield Strength (MPa) Tensile Strength (MPa)
t ≤ 16 ≥ 460 570 – 720
16 < t ≤ 40 ≥ 450 570 – 720
40 < t ≤ 75 ≥ 430 570 – 720
75 < t ≤ 100 ≥ 420 570 – 720
t > 100 By agreement By agreement

Elongation — read together with the test piece, because the number depends on it.

Thickness of Plate Test Piece Min. Elongation %
t ≤ 16 mm No. 5 ≥ 19
16 mm < t No. 5 ≥ 26
t > 20 mm No. 4 ≥ 20

Toughness and bending.

Item Requirement
Charpy V-notch test temperature −5 °C
Min. absorbed energy ≥ 47 J No. 4 test piece, in rolling direction
Bend test 180°, inner diameter 3 a test piece width b ≥ 35 mm, per our product sheet
Why these numbers differ from the older version of this page. The table previously published here listed SM570 at 365 / 355 MPa yield with 520 – 640 MPa tensile and a 0 °C impact temperature — those are the SM490YA/YB and SM520B/C columns of JIS G3106, not the SM570 column. What is published above is the SM570 column: 460 / 450 / 430 / 420 MPa yield, 570 – 720 MPa tensile, −5 °C and 47 J. Two further points of caution: published renderings of the elongation brackets disagree (some sources attach 19 / 26 / 20 % to different thickness bands), and toughness always has to be read with the test piece and direction — so take the governing value for your thickness from the MTC, not from a summary table.

07Delivery Condition & Heat Treatment

SM570 is normally a controlled-rolled grade; heat treatment is ordered when the design asks for it.

Item Options
Delivery Condition CR — Controlled rolled (usual) TMCP AR — As rolled N — Normalized N+T Q+T
Additional Conditions UT Z15 / Z25 / Z35 Charpy V-notch Third-party inspection Coated or shot blasted
Surface Treatment As rolled Shot blasted Primed Painted
Order it explicitly. JIS G3106 does not lock SM570 to a single delivery condition — controlled rolling is the usual route and keeps the cost down, while normalizing or quenching and tempering changes the property set and the price. Always write the delivery condition into the enquiry, otherwise quotations from different mills cannot be compared. Extra requirements such as through-thickness (Z) testing, ultrasonic acceptance level or a nominated inspection agency have to be built into the order rather than added afterwards.

08Typical Applications

Where SM570 plate is normally consumed — highly loaded welded structures.

Bridges & Long-Span Structures

Main girders, truss members, cross beams and deck supports where cutting the section weight pays back twice.

Cranes, Booms & Lifting Gear

Telescopic and lattice booms, crane chassis, pump-truck structures and other lifting equipment where yield per kilogram drives the design.

Heavy & Mobile Machinery

Dump truck bodies, excavator and shovel parts, chassis frames and mining haulage equipment subject to fatigue and impact loading.

Mining, Drilling & Energy

Coal mine hydraulic supports, oil derricks, drilling rigs, wind turbine tower sections and heavy fan housings.

Buildings, Ships & Vehicles

Heavily loaded columns and frames in industrial buildings, hull and vehicle structures, and containers where weldable high strength plate is specified.

One boundary worth respecting: SM570 is a welded structural grade, not a pressure-vessel or boiler code grade. It is used for structural shells, supports and containers, but a code-stamped pressure vessel has to be built from the pressure-purpose specification named in the design (for example a JIS G3115 or EN 10028 grade) — check the applicable code before substituting SM570 into a pressure boundary.

09Processing, Testing & Supply

From mill plate to a certified, fabrication-ready item.

1

Cutting & Profiling

Plate cut to length and width, profiled to drawing and bevelled for weld preparation on flame, plasma or laser equipment.

2

Forming & Welding

Bending and rolling to radius, plus welded assemblies built under a qualified procedure with the preheat and consumables the Ceq calls for.

3

Surface Treatment

Shot blasting to remove mill scale, then shop primer or full paint system, followed by export marking and packing.

4

Inspection & Certified Delivery

Chemical analysis, tensile, bend and Charpy testing per heat, UT and Z-direction testing when specified, then the MTC and any third-party report.

  • Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1, or 3.2 with third-party endorsement
  • Heat analysis and mechanical test report (yield, tensile, elongation, Charpy with temperature)
  • Ultrasonic testing report to the agreed acceptance level
  • Heat treatment chart where N, N+T or Q+T is ordered
  • Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, Intertek or another nominated agency
  • Export packing, marking and loading supervision
Quote checklist — you get a faster, comparable price if you send: thickness × width × length, quantity, delivery condition (CR, TMCP, AR, N, N+T or Q+T), required mechanical values including the impact temperature and energy, UT acceptance level and any Z-direction requirement, surface treatment, MTC type, destination port and payment terms. MOQ is 1 PC.

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Is SM570 held in stock, and how fast can you ship?
Our stock programme covers SM400, SM490 and SM520; SM570 is normally rolled to order, which is why the published production time is 10 – 40 days. Where a rolling schedule slot is open, the published quantity schedule applies: 5 days for 1 – 10 t, 10 days for 10 – 50 t and negotiable above 50 t. Send the size and quantity and we confirm the real date against the mill programme.
Q2How does SM570 compare with SM520 and SM490?
Same standard, three steps of strength: SM490 gives 325 MPa minimum yield with 490 – 610 MPa tensile, SM520 gives 365 MPa with 520 – 640 MPa, and SM570 gives 460 MPa with 570 – 720 MPa. Moving up a step lets you thin the section down, but it raises the Ceq and tightens welding control, so the step only pays off when the design actually uses the extra strength. See our pages for SM490YA and SM490YB.
Q3What impact test does SM570 have to pass?
JIS G3106 sets SM570 at −5 °C with 47 J minimum on a No. 4 test piece taken in the rolling direction — the lowest test temperature in the whole JIS G3106 family, and one of the reasons the grade is chosen for cold-climate structures. Note that our older product sheet quoted 0 °C for this grade; that is the SM490 / SM520 temperature, not the SM570 one. If your project needs a lower temperature or a higher energy, say so in the enquiry — it changes what the mill has to aim at.
Q4Can SM570 be welded without preheat?
It is a weldable grade by design — Ceq is capped at 0.44 for plate up to 50 mm and 0.47 above it — but "weldable" does not mean "without procedure". Preheat and interpass temperature depend on thickness, joint restraint, hydrogen level of the consumable and the heat input, and they are set by your welding procedure qualification, not by the grade name. Use low-hydrogen consumables, control heat input, and qualify the procedure on the actual thickness.
Q5Can you supply plate thicker than 100 mm?
JIS G3106 publishes yield, tensile and elongation values for SM570 up to 100 mm; above 100 mm the values are by agreement between purchaser and manufacturer. In practice that means the required properties have to be written into the order and confirmed by the mill before production, because the standard no longer guarantees them. Tell us the thickness and the property you need and we will confirm what the route can hold.
Q6Which documents come with the material?
A Mill Test Certificate reporting heat analysis and the test results, issued to EN 10204 3.1 as standard and to 3.2 when a third party endorses it. UT reports, Z-direction results, Charpy reports and the heat treatment chart are added when they are specified. Ask for any extra coverage — a nominated inspection agency, additional impact testing or a specific UT acceptance level — at enquiry stage so it can be built into the order rather than negotiated after rolling.
