EN 10025-3 S355NL is a fine-grain, normalized structural steel — a 355 MPa-yield European grade in the EN 10025-3 family. Its name is a specification: S is structural steel, 355 is the minimum yield strength in MPa (up to 16 mm), N is normalized / normalized rolled, L is the low-temperature impact class — a Charpy V-notch test at −50 °C with a minimum of 27 J (longitudinal), and the material number is 1.0546. It belongs to EN 10025-3, the part of the European structural-steel standard that covers normalized/normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steels.

S355NL is supplied as plate, sheet, coil and section for welded and bolted structures that must stay tough in the cold — offshore installations, bridges and infrastructure in cold climates, cranes and lifting equipment, wind-turbine towers on cold sites, mining equipment and transport that sees sub-zero service. The “L” matters: it is the −50 °C impact class, so it is the right choice when the structure is exposed to real winter or arctic conditions. Because it is a low-carbon, low-CEV (≤ 0.43 %) fine-grain steel, it welds with ordinary consumables and normally needs no preheat in ordinary thicknesses. Note — the older listing titled this grade “Non-alloy structural steel.” That label fits EN 10025-2 grades (S275JR / S355JR / S355J0); EN 10025-3 is specifically the fine-grain normalized part, so “fine-grain normalized” is the accurate description here.

02Technical Specifications

What this page publishes, and what must be confirmed on the mill certificate when you enquire.

Item Specification
Executive Standard EN 10025-3 (European standard for hot-rolled products of structural steels — Part 3: technical delivery conditions for normalized/normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steels). The current edition is EN 10025-3:2019. The older listing for this grade carried the “Non-alloy” wording of EN 10025-2; the data here follows EN 10025-3, the correct part for a normalized fine-grain grade.
Steel Grade S355NL (material number 1.0546)
Steel Category Fine-grain normalized structural steel — the correct description for EN 10025-3 grades (corrects the old “Non-alloy” title; EN 10025-2, not EN 10025-3, is the non-alloy part)
Product Forms Covered Steel Plate Sheet Coil hot-rolled plate, sheet and coil on this page
Thickness Range up to 150 mm (EN 10025-3 mechanical values are given to 150 mm; the mill confirms the exact rolling thickness on enquiry)
Production Way Normalized (+N) as the defining supply — EN 10025-3 grades are normalized / normalized-rolled. This is the key difference from EN 10025-2 grades such as S355J2, which are as-rolled or TMCP.
Delivery Condition +N (normalized) as standard; the “N” in the grade already means normalized — see section 07
Impact Requirement −50 °C, ≥ 27 J longitudinal Charpy V-notch — this is what the “L” grade guarantees
MOQ 1 PC small-batch orders supported
Lead Time by Quantity Stock items shipped promptly; custom production typically 10 – 40 working days by quantity
Payment Terms T/T L/C at sight
Processing Services Cutting to length and width, profiling, bevelling, bending, drilling, welding, Z15/Z25/Z35, heat treatment, painting and UT flaw detection (Grade 1 / Grade 2)
Certification Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1, or 3.2 with third-party endorsement; heat analysis and mechanical test report
Two things worth clearing up about this table. First, S355NL is a fine-grain normalized structural steel, and “fine-grain normalized” is the correct label here — it is not the “non-alloy” descriptor that fits EN 10025-2 grades. EN 10025-3 achieves its toughness and weldability through a fine austenitic grain (Nb / V / Ti / Al micro-alloying) plus a normalizing heat treatment, not through a simple non-alloy chemistry. Second, the older listing cited a wide thickness range and a non-standard chemistry table (it listed mandatory chromium, nickel, copper and vanadium ranges); the standard EN 10025-3 chemistry is a simple C–Mn grade with tight phosphorus/sulphur and nitrogen control, no mandatory Cr/Ni/V — the chemistry here follows EN 10025-3:2019 Table 2.

03How to Read the Grade

Every part of S355NL is a specification, not a marketing name.

Part Meaning
S Structural steel — the European convention for structural-steel grades.
355 The specified minimum yield strength in MPa (up to 16 mm). As with all EN 10025 grades, the first number is a yield value, not a tensile one.
N Normalized / normalized rolled — the plate is supplied in the normalized condition (or normalized-rolled), which gives a uniform, fine ferrite–pearlite structure and stable properties through the thickness.
L Low-temperature impact class: the steel is Charpy V-notch tested at −50 °C with a minimum absorbed energy of 27 J (longitudinal). L = low temperature; this is what separates S355NL from S355N, which is tested at −20 °C. Both carry the same 355 MPa yield.
1.0546 The European material number (Werkstoffnummer) for S355NL — use it on drawings and certificates to remove any ambiguity about which grade is meant.
EN 10025-3 Part 3 of the European structural-steel standard — normalized/normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steels. It is distinct from EN 10025-2 (non-alloy, e.g. S355JR / S355J0) and EN 10025-4 (thermomechanically rolled / low-temperature grades such as S355ML).

The S355 low-temperature ladder at the 355 MPa level — the letter/temperature is what changes.

Grade Standard Min. yield Impact test
S355N EN 10025-3 355 MPa -20 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355NL (this page) EN 10025-3 355 MPa −50 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355J2 EN 10025-2 355 MPa -20 °C, ≥ 27 J
S355K2 EN 10025-2 355 MPa -20 °C, ≥ 40 J
Pick by the coldest service temperature and the yield you actually need. Across the S355 rung, S355NL is the −50 °C option — for the same 355 MPa yield but warmer duty, S355N (−20°C) is its own family sibling, and for non-fine-grain supply use S355J2 (−20 °C). The yield, tensile and thickness brackets are the same across the 355 MPa rung — only the impact temperature (and K2’s higher energy) differs. Note — the older listing parsed this grade under a “Non-alloy” title. EN 10025-3 has no “non-alloy” label; the grade parses as S / 355 / N / L, where 355 is the yield, N is normalized and L is the −50 °C impact class.

04Equivalent Grades

S355NL is the −50 °C rung of the European fine-grain normalized family. The table maps it to its closest grades — a similar yield figure is not a licence to substitute; check chemistry, toughness, condition and thickness brackets before swapping. Linked grades open their own page.

Standard Grade Min. Yield What to check before substituting
EN 10025-3 (this page) S355NL 355 MPa The European fine-grain normalized grade — −50 °C, ≥ 27 J, material 1.0546 (this page)
EN 10025-3 S355N 355 MPa The same EN 10025-3 fine-grain normalized grade with −20 °C impact — the warmer-climate sibling of S355NL. Choose it when sub-zero service is light.
EN 10025-2 S355J2 355 MPa The S355 rung at −20 °C, but a non-fine-grain, as-rolled/TMCP grade — not a direct low-temperature equal of S355NL.
EN 10025-2 S355K2 355 MPa The S355 rung with −20 °C and 40 J — a higher-toughness, non-fine-grain option. Named for cross-reference.
EN 10025-2 S355JR 355 MPa The S355 rung at +20 °C — room-temperature only; not for cold service.
ASTM A572 A572 Grade 50 345 MPa The closest US plate by yield (~345 MPa). A572 does not mandate low-temperature impact, so add −50 °C / 27 J as a supplementary requirement when substituting for S355NL.
ASTM A633 A633 Grade C / D 345 MPa The US normalized grade for low-temperature service — a closer match to S355NL’s normalized supply and cold duty than A572; verify chemistry and impact against the governing code.
JIS G3106 SM490YA / SM490YB ~355 MPa The Japanese high-strength structural plates at about the S355 yield — a near, not exact, match; verify chemistry and impact against the governing code.
JIS G3101 SS490B ~285 MPa (tensile-based) The Japanese general-structural plate; its number is roughly a tensile value, so the true yield is below 355 MPa. A near, not exact, match.
GB/T 1591 Q345D / Q355D (−20 °C) / Q345E / Q355E (−40 °C) 345 MPa The Chinese 345 MPa grade; Q345D/Q355D (−20 °C) or Q345E/Q355E (−40 °C) are the cold-climate versions — a close Chinese equivalent for low-temperature projects. The linked page is the Q345C family page.
DIN 17102 (legacy) StE 355 355 MPa The old German designation for S355NL — S355NL is the modern EN successor.
AFNOR (legacy) E 355 FP 355 MPa The old French fine-grain designation; named for cross-reference.
BS 4360 (legacy) 50DD 355 MPa The old UK designation — S355NL is its modern EN replacement.
Strength proximity is not interchangeability. Chemistry limits, toughness classes, delivery conditions and thickness brackets all differ between these standards, and a substitution must be signed off by the designer against the governing code. Three traps to name: S355NL’s “L” guarantees −50 °C impact — do not use it where the structure sees only light cold (use S355N or S355J2); the US grade A572 Grade 50 is about 345 MPa with no low-temperature impact mandate, so S355NL is the safer cold-climate substitute, or add the −50 °C requirement to A572; and for true US low-temperature supply, ASTM A633 Grade C/D (normalized) is closer than A572. Where a Chinese project needs the closest band, specify Q345D/Q355D (−20 °C) or Q345E/Q355E (−40 °C).

05Chemical Composition

Ladle (cast) analysis limits in weight percent, per EN 10025-3:2019 Table 2 for S355NL. S355NL is a simple C–Mn fine-grain grade; the tight phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen limits are what let it stay tough at −50 °C.

Element Ladle analysis (max %, unless noted)
Carbon, C ≤ 0.20
Silicon, Si ≤ 0.50
Manganese, Mn 0.90 – 1.65
Phosphorus, P ≤ 0.025 (tighter than the 0.030 of EN 10025-2 non-alloy grades)
Sulphur, S ≤ 0.015 (tighter than the 0.030 of EN 10025-2 non-alloy grades)
Nitrogen, N ≤ 0.015 (≤ 0.020 when nitrogen is fixed / grain-refining treated)
Copper, Cu ≤ 0.55 (when specified)

Carbon equivalent — the weldability gate.

Thickness range CEV max (%)
≤ 63 mm 0.43
> 63 – 100 mm 0.45
> 100 – 150 mm 0.47
Read the certificate against this table, not against a one-line data sheet. S355NL is a fine-grain steel, but its chemistry is deliberately simple: carbon is capped at 0.20 % to keep the heat-affected zone sound after welding, manganese runs 0.90 – 1.65 % for strength, and phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen are held tight (0.025 / 0.015 / 0.015) so the −50 °C impact can be met. The micro-alloying (Nb / V / Ti / Al) that earns the “fine-grain” name is present in small, controlled amounts and is reported on the mill certificate, not as a ladle limit in the standard table. The carbon equivalent CEV — C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15 — is limited to ≤ 0.43 % up to 63 mm (0.45 % to 100 mm, 0.47 % to 150 mm), which is why S355NL welds without preheat in ordinary thicknesses. The older listing for this grade published a non-standard table that included mandatory chromium, nickel, copper and vanadium ranges — those are not part of EN 10025-3 S355NL; the chemistry here follows the standard and the CEV line (omitted on the old page) is added. For the exact CEV of the lot, read it off the EN 10204 certificate.

06Mechanical Properties

Minimum room-temperature values, read against nominal thickness, per EN 10025-3:2019. The original listing for this grade gave a single yield of 355 MPa and an elongation of 20 % with no thickness ladder and no impact value; here they are the correct thickness ladders.

Thickness (mm) Yield ReH min (MPa) Tensile Rm (MPa)
≤ 16 355 510 – 680
> 16 – 40 345 470 – 630
> 40 – 63 335 470 – 630
> 63 – 80 325 470 – 630
> 80 – 100 315 470 – 630
> 100 – 150 295 450 – 600

Elongation & impact — the properties the −50 °C / 27 J grade is defined by.

Property Requirement
Elongation A (Lo = 5.65√So, longitudinal) ≥ 22 % for 3–40 mm; ≥ 21 % (40–63 mm); ≥ 20 % (63–100 mm); ≥ 18 % (100–150 mm)
Charpy V-notch, longitudinal −50 °C, ≥ 27 J (the S355NL requirement — the “L” grade)
Three points on reading the table. First, the yield is given in thickness bands (355 MPa up to 16 mm, stepping down to 295 MPa at 100–150 mm) because heavier plate receives less reduction during rolling. Second, the tensile band shifts from 510–680 / 470–630 MPa (up to 100 mm) to 450–600 MPa above 100 mm. Third, the impact is a guaranteed −50 °C / ≥ 27 J — this is the defining property of the “L” suffix, and it is tested longitudinally; transverse values are 3 J lower by the standard. The older listing gave only a single 355 MPa yield and a 20 % elongation with no thickness ladder and no impact value; the correct ladders and the −50 °C impact are added here. For any warmer duty, switch to S355N (−50°C → −20°C).

07Delivery Condition, Heat Treatment & Additional Requirements

S355NL is normalized by definition; the “N” is part of the grade, so +N is the supply, not an add-on.

Item Options
Delivery Condition +N — Normalized (the defining supply of EN 10025-3) +N (normalized-rolled)
Additional Conditions UT −50°C Charpy V-notch Z15 / Z25 / Z35 Third-party test (SGS) Coated or shot blasted and painting
Surface Treatment As normalized Shot blasted Primed Painted

What the specification sets, and what has to be added by the order.

Item Status in EN 10025-3 How it is obtained
Delivery condition Normalized (+N) as standard The “N” in S355NL means normalized / normalized-rolled; this is the defining supply of EN 10025-3, unlike EN 10025-2 grades which are as-rolled or TMCP.
Heat treatment Normalizing is the defined supply Normalizing (and the fine-grain micro-alloying) gives the uniform structure and −50 °C toughness; it is built into the grade, not an extra.
Low-temperature impact −50 °C / ≥ 27 J at the “L” grade Built into the grade; third-party witnessed −50 °C impact on request.
Ultrasonic testing Not specified EN 10160 at an agreed acceptance level, by agreement.
Through-thickness (Z) properties Not specified Z15 / Z25 / Z35 by agreement where the joint pulls through the plate thickness (common in offshore and crane applications).
Third-party inspection Not specified SGS, BV, TUV or Intertek at the mill before shipment.
Certificate MTC per the specification EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 with third-party endorsement on request.
Keep the condition and the standard in the enquiry. S355NL is delivered normalized (+N) and tested per heat; anything beyond that — UT, Z-direction, third-party inspection — has to be written into the order before rolling, not added afterwards. Because the grade name already carries the delivery condition (the “N”) and the toughness class (the “L”), just name the standard (EN 10025-3) and the material number 1.0546 — the certificate reads S355NL either way. The older listing mixed this grade in with the wide delivery states of other parts; for EN 10025-3 the supply is normalized, full stop.

08Typical Applications

Where a 355 MPa fine-grain normalized steel must stay tough in the cold.

Offshore & Marine

Offshore platforms, topside structures and marine fabrications — S355NL’s normalized fine grain and −50 °C impact suit the low-service-temperature, highly-restrained joints typical of offshore steelwork.

Cold-Climate Bridges & Infrastructure

Bridge main girders, built-up sections and splice plates for bridges and infrastructure in cold and arctic climates — S355NL gives the −50 °C toughness that winter and polar service demand.

Cranes & Lifting Equipment

Crane booms, gantries and lifting frames — fine-grain normalized steel with guaranteed low-temperature impact resists the brittle fracture that restrained, dynamically-loaded cold-service joints are exposed to.

Wind & Energy Structures

Wind-turbine towers and support structures on cold sites — the high yield with −50 °C toughness and good weldability suits welded tower sections in northern and offshore wind.

Cold-Region Mining & Transport

Mining equipment, haul structures and transport frames for sub-zero regions — S355NL keeps a useful yield with weldability and formability where the structure lives in the cold year-round.

Why specify S355NL rather than S355N, S355J2 or S355JR: it gives the same 355 MPa yield as its siblings but guarantees toughness down to −50 °C, so it is the choice when the structure is genuinely exposed to arctic or harsh winter service. What it does not give you is a higher yield; for the same low-temperature capability at higher strength, designers move to S420NL / S460NL (still EN 10025-3) or an EN 10025-4 TMCP grade. For warmer duty at the same yield, S355N (−20 °C) is the lighter-touch family sibling; for non-fine-grain supply, S355J2.

09Processing, Testing & Supply

From mill plate to a cut, certified, ready-to-fit low-temperature structural item.

1

Cutting & Profiling

Plate, sheet and coil cut to length and width, profiled to drawing and bevelled for weld preparation on flame, plasma or laser equipment.

2

Forming, Bending & Welding

Bending and rolling to radius, cold forming to the radius the thickness allows, plus welded assemblies built under a qualified procedure — S355NL welds with ordinary consumables; preheat is normally unnecessary below ~25 mm because CEV ≤ 0.43, but thicker or highly restrained joints follow the qualified WPS.

3

Surface Treatment

Shot blasting to remove mill scale, then shop primer or full paint system, followed by export marking and seaworthy packing.

4

Inspection & Certified Delivery

Chemical analysis and tensile testing per heat, the defining −50 °C Charpy, UT and Z-direction testing when specified, then the MTC carrying the grade, the EN 10025-3 standard and any third-party report.

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1What does EN 10025-3 S355NL actually mean?
S355NL is a European fine-grain, normalized structural steel. S is structural, 355 is the minimum yield in MPa, N is normalized (the defining delivery condition), and L is the low-temperature impact class — a Charpy V-notch test at −50 °C with ≥ 27 J (longitudinal). The material number is 1.0546, and the standard is EN 10025-3 (Part 3: normalized/normalized-rolled weldable fine-grain structural steels), distinct from EN 10025-2 (non-alloy, e.g. S355JR / S355J0) and EN 10025-4 (TMCP / low-temperature grades such as S355ML).
Q2Is S355NL a fine-grain steel or a non-alloy steel?
S355NL is a fine-grain normalized structural steel per EN 10025-3. The older listing titled it “Non-alloy structural steel,” but that label fits EN 10025-2 grades, not EN 10025-3. EN 10025-3 grades achieve their toughness and weldability through a fine austenitic grain (Nb / V / Ti / Al micro-alloying) plus a normalizing heat treatment — that is what “fine-grain” means here. The site category “Carbon and Low-alloy Steel” is kept for navigation.
Q3What is S355NL equivalent to in EN / ASTM / JIS / GB?
At 355 MPa, the same-family option is EN 10025-3 S355N (−20 °C, the warmer sibling); in EN 10025-2 the cold options are S355J2 (−20 °C, non-fine-grain) and S355K2 (−20 °C, 40 J). In the US the closest is ASTM A572 Grade 50 (~345 MPa, no low-temperature impact) — add −50 °C / 27 J as a supplementary requirement — or ASTM A633 Grade C/D (normalized, low-temperature, a closer match). In Japan SM490YA / SM490YB (~355 MPa) and SS490B (tensile-based, lower yield); in China Q345D / Q355D (−20 °C) or Q345E / Q355E (−40 °C). Legacy equivalents are DIN StE 355, AFNOR E 355 FP and BS 4360 50DD. All are procurement mappings; confirm against your governing code.
Q4Is the impact value −50 °C / 27 J, and what if I need warmer or colder?
Yes — EN 10025-3 specifies −50 °C with ≥ 27 J (longitudinal) for S355NL. The “L” suffix is specifically the low-temperature impact class, so it is the right grade for structures exposed to arctic or harsh winter service. If the structure sees only light cold, step down to S355N (−20 °C, same EN 10025-3 family). For room-temperature duty, S355JR (+20 °C) is the cheaper entry class. There is no colder EN 10025-3 class than S355NL at 355 MPa; for higher strength at low temperature, move to S420NL / S460NL or an EN 10025-4 TMCP grade.
Q5Can I substitute S355N, S355J2, A572 or A633 for S355NL?
Only with the designer’s sign-off against the governing code. S355N is the same EN 10025-3 fine-grain normalized grade but at −20 °C, so it is the warmer-climate sibling. S355J2 is the same yield at −20 °C but non-fine-grain and as-rolled/TMCP, not a direct low-temperature equal. A572 Grade 50 is ~345 MPa and does not mandate low-temperature impact, so add −50 °C / 27 J as a supplementary requirement (or choose ASTM A633 Grade C/D, which is normalized for low-temperature service). S355NL’s edge is the simple, weldable, low-CEV fine-grain chemistry with a guaranteed −50 °C impact.
Q6How thick, how fast, what paperwork, and is the old page’s data right?
From 1 PC, with stock items shipped promptly and custom production typically 10–40 working days by quantity. Each heat ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate. The figures on this page re-organise and correct the older listing for this grade: the chemistry now carries the correct EN 10025-3 ladle set (C ≤ 0.20, Si ≤ 0.50, Mn 0.90–1.65, P ≤ 0.025, S ≤ 0.015, N ≤ 0.015, Cu ≤ 0.55, CEV ≤ 0.43 / 0.45 / 0.47) and the mechanical data is presented as the correct thickness ladders — the yield steps 355 → 295 MPa, tensile 510–680 / 470–630 / 450–600 MPa, elongation ≥ 22 % → 18 % and the defining −50 °C / ≥ 27 J impact. We also corrected three things from the old listing: the grade is not a “Non-alloy” steel but a fine-grain normalized grade per EN 10025-3; the old page’s chemistry table listed mandatory chromium, nickel, copper and vanadium ranges that are not part of EN 10025-3; and the CEV and −50 °C impact lines, omitted on the old page, are added here.
Sources and limits: the figures on this page are reference information drawn from EN 10025-3:2019 (S355NL, material number 1.0546) and published steel data sheets. S355NL is a fine-grain normalized structural steel; the chemistry limits and the tensile / yield / elongation / −50 °C / 27 J impact floors are the standard requirements, while actual heat values are recorded on the EN 10204 certificate of the lot supplied. The older listing for this grade had three issues we corrected: it titled the grade “Non-alloy” (EN 10025-3 is the fine-grain normalized part, not the non-alloy part); its chemistry table listed mandatory Cr / Ni / Cu / V ranges that are not part of EN 10025-3; and the CEV and −50 °C impact lines, omitted on the old page, are added here. BBN supplies, cuts and processes the plate.

Send us your standard (EN 10025-3), material number (1.0546), thickness, width and length, quantity, product form, the −50 °C impact requirement and any UT / Z-direction requirement. We will reply with what the mill can roll and certify at that thickness, plate or cut-length options, mill price and production lead time — and tell you plainly if a warmer-climate grade such as S355N would do, or if a higher-strength low-temperature grade (S420NL / S460NL) should be considered.
