Product Introduction

01Product Overview

NM WEAR PLATE 360 HBW

NM360 is an abrasion resistant steel defined by the Chinese national standard GB/T 24186. The letters NM are the pinyin for NaiMo — meaning "wear-resistant" — and the 360 is the nominal Brinell hardness in HBW. It is supplied quenched and tempered (Q&T) and is the most formable and weldable grade in the Chinese NM wear-plate family.

NM360 is bought where moderate sliding and impact wear would quickly wear out mild or low-alloy plate, but where a higher NM grade would be over-specified and harder to cut, bend and weld. Typical jobs are truck-body and dumper liners, buckets, chutes, hoppers and ground-engaging parts in construction, quarrying and bulk handling.

02Technical Specifications

What this page publishes, and what must be confirmed on the mill certificate when you enquire.

Item Specification
Executive Standard GB/T 24186 (Chinese national standard for abrasion-resistant steel plates for construction and machinery). NM = NaiMo (wear-resistant); the grade has no single ASTM or EN equivalent, but Hardox 400 and JFE EH360 are trade plates at a similar hardness
Steel Grade NM360 (nominal 360 HBW)
Steel Category Abrasion resistant / wear plate, moderate-duty
Product Form Hot-rolled plate, quenched and tempered (Q+T)
Thickness Range Typically 6 – 100 mm; GB/T 24186 covers a broad range and the exact rolled thickness is confirmed with the mill
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme; cut-to-length and cut-to-shape available
Thickness Covered by Published Data The whole standard range; the figures below are typical and mill-dependent
MOQ 1 ton (mixed sizes negotiable)
Lead Time by Quantity 1 – 10 t: about 5 days; 10 – 50 t: about 10 days; > 50 t: negotiable
Payment Terms L/C, T/T, D/P, Western Union, Paypal, Money Gram
Processing Services Cutting (laser / plasma / water-jet), bending, drilling, welding, surface preparation
Certification Mill test certificate (MTC) with hardness and ladle analysis; third-party inspection on request
Only the hardness is a guaranteed property. GB/T 24186 fixes NM360’s nominal 360 HBW; the exact delivered hardness band varies with thickness and with the producing mill, and thicker plates can guarantee a slightly lower through-hardened hardness at the core. Chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are mill-typical values — confirm the exact composition and mechanicals on the MTC of the lot you buy.

03How to Read the Grade

The three characters tell you the product family and the hardness; they tell you nothing about chemistry or welding behaviour.

Part Meaning
NM NaiMo (wear-resistant) — the plate is made to resist sliding and impact wear, not to carry structural load as its primary job
360 Nominal Brinell hardness, 360 HBW. The real delivery band is defined by GB/T 24186 and narrows with thickness

Where NM360 sits in the Chinese NM wear-plate ladder

Grade Nominal HBW Typical delivered band (guide) Use when
NM360 360 ~330 – 390 HBW (guide) Moderate wear, the most formable and weldable grade
NM400 400 ~360 – 440 HBW Moderate-to-heavy wear
NM450 450 ~410 – 480 HBW Moderate-to-heavy wear
NM500 500 ~460 – 540 HBW Heavy sliding / impact, the common workhorse
NM550 550 ~520 – 580 HBW Severe wear, limited forming
NM600 600 570 – 640 HBW (guaranteed) Extreme abrasion, minimal forming
Start at the lowest grade that survives the wear. NM360 is the most formable and weldable grade in the NM family, so it is the right first choice for moderate wear and for parts that need bending or welding. Step up the ladder only where NM360 wears out too quickly.

04Chemical Composition

Because NM360 is made to a hardness target, the analysis below is a typical window seen across major GB/T 24186 producers. Your heat’s real chemistry is on its MTC.

Element Typical Content (max unless noted), %
C ≤ 0.25 (lower than the high-hardness NM grades — keeps welding easier)
Mn ≤ 1.60
Si ≤ 0.70
Cr ≤ 1.00
Mo ≤ 0.60
Ni ≤ 1.00
Ti / Nb ≤ 0.05 (optional, grain refinement)
B ≤ 0.005
P ≤ 0.025
S ≤ 0.015
Carbon Equivalent (CEV) about 0.45 – 0.65 (typical) — moderate, easier welding than the high-hardness NM grades
Processing Fine-grained, aluminium-killed; quenched and tempered
The chemistry is mill-dependent. Different producers reach the same nominal 360 HBW with different recipes, so these figures are a representative range, not a guaranteed composition. Specify and verify against the MTC of the lot you receive.

05Mechanical Properties & Tolerance

Only the hardness is a guaranteed delivery property. The rest are typical values for design reference.

Property Value Status
Surface / bulk hardness 360 HBW nominal (band per GB/T 24186) Guaranteed (the only guaranteed item, per GB/T 24186)
Yield strength about 900 MPa (130 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Tensile strength about 1100 MPa (160 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Elongation A5 about 12 – 18 % Typical
Charpy V-notch impact grade / heat-dependent; where specified typically 20 – 40 J at low temperature Typical / not guaranteed

Thickness tolerance, flatness and surface

Item Requirement
Thickness Tolerance Per producing mill standard (commonly 0 / + per mm of thickness); exact value on the MTC
Flatness Per mill standard / EN 10051-class acceptance where agreed
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme
Surface Quality Per mill standard; descaled and inspected before despatch
Hardness is the number you can rely on. NM360 is sold and accepted on its Brinell value. Yield, tensile and impact are useful for estimating, but any of them used in a calculation must come from a test on the delivered lot, not from this page.

06Wear Service and Thickness Selection

NM360 is the most formable NM grade — a moderate-duty abrasion plate. Choose a thickness from the wear duty, not from the hardness number.

Wear-service guidance (by duty, not by a table)

Duty How the thickness is chosen
Truck-body / dumper liners Set by the wear rate you can tolerate; 6 – 20 mm is common for moderate-duty bodies
Excavator buckets / cutting edges Set by impact energy and the weld-on profile; NM360 is weldable enough for most bucket rebuilds
Chutes / hoppers / transfer points Set by the abrasiveness and velocity of the flowing material
Ground-engaging / scraper parts Set by soil and aggregate abrasiveness; a good first choice where bending or welding is needed
Do not over-specify. If NM360 survives the duty, it will be cheaper and easier to cut, bend and weld than NM400 – NM600. Reserve the higher grades for where NM360 wears out too fast.

07Processing & Fabrication Guidelines

NM360 is the easiest NM grade to work — lower carbon equivalent than the high-hardness grades — so the workshop rules are the moderate ones.

Topic Guideline
Further Heat Treatment Not intended. Supplied quenched and tempered; any anneal or re-quench lowers hardness and toughness
Cold Bending Feasible with a moderate minimum bend radius (a few times t); do a sample bend before tooling is committed
Cutting Laser, plasma and water-jet are the practical routes; water-jet best preserves the cut edge. Mechanical shearing needs heavy-duty, hardened tooling
Welding Weldable with a moderate carbon equivalent (CEV ~0.5–0.6): preheat (around 100 – 150 °C), low-hydrogen consumables, controlled interpass; qualify the procedure for your thickness
Machining Carbide-tipped tools, rigid set-up, low speed and high feed, ample coolant
Workshop Safety Cutting and grinding make fine steel dust — wear suitable respiratory protection
Do not take a welding or bending number from a web page. The right preheat, consumable and bend radius depend on the exact heat and thickness. Tell us the operation and we will confirm the parameter set before you cut steel.

08Typical Applications

Where a moderate, formable wear plate does the work.

Truck & Dumper Liners

Body, tailgate and hopper liners for moderate-duty hauling of rock, aggregate and ore.

Bucket & Cutting Edges

Excavator and loader buckets, cutting edges and wear bars where welding repair is routine.

Crushers & Mills

Moderate-duty concaves, liners and grinding plates in crushing and milling plant.

Chutes & Hoppers

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Is NM360 a national standard grade (like GB/T 24186)?
Yes. NM360 is defined by GB/T 24186, the Chinese national standard for abrasion-resistant steel plates for construction and machinery. NM = NaiMo (wear-resistant); 360 = nominal 360 HBW. It is not an ASTM or EN grade, but Hardox 400 and JFE EH360 are trade plates at a similar hardness.
Q2360 HBW, or an exact number?
360 is the nominal grade name. GB/T 24186 defines the actual delivered hardness band, which narrows with thickness and varies between mills; the typical delivered window is around 330 – 390 HBW. Order and inspect against the band on the MTC, not against the round number.
Q3What are the equivalent grades to NM360?
Hardox 400 (SSAB) and JFE EH360 (JFE Steel) are wear plates at a similar hardness. Chemistry, dimensions and test routines differ between mills, so confirm true equivalence on the mill test certificate rather than by name alone.
Q4Can NM360 be welded?
Yes, and it is much easier to weld than the high-hardness NM grades thanks to its lower carbon equivalent (CEV ~0.5–0.6). Welding typically needs preheat of around 100–150 °C, low-hydrogen consumables and a qualified procedure for the thickness. It is delivered quenched and tempered and is not meant for further heat treatment.
Q5How do I choose the thickness?
From the wear duty, not the hardness number. NM360 is the most formable and weldable grade in the NM family, so use it for moderate wear and for parts that need bending or welding; step up to NM400 – NM600 only where NM360 wears out too fast.
Q6What quantity, how fast, what paperwork?
From 1 ton, with typical lead times of about 5 days for 1–10 t, about 10 days for 10–50 t and negotiable above 50 t. Each heat ships with an MTC carrying hardness and ladle analysis; third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
Sources and limits: the figures on this page are reference information drawn from GB/T 24186 and published abrasion-resistant steel literature and producer data sheets. NM360 is defined by GB/T 24186; hardness (nominal 360 HBW) is the guaranteed property, while chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are typical and mill-dependent and must be confirmed on the mill test certificate of the lot supplied. NM360 is a pure abrasion-resistant (wear) plate — any ballistic-protection use is a different product and is not warranted by this page. BBN supplies, cuts and processes the plate.
