Product Introduction

01Product Overview

NM WEAR PLATE 570-640 HBW

NM600 is a through-hardened abrasion resistant steel defined by the Chinese national standard GB/T 24186. The letters NM are the pinyin for NaiMo — "wear-resistant" — and the 600 is the nominal Brinell hardness in HBW. What the grade actually delivers is the band either side of that number — 570 – 640 HBW — on a plate supplied quenched and tempered (Q&T).

It is the hardest grade in the Chinese NM wear-plate family and is bought for the most punishing sliding and impact wear: mining truck bodies, crusher and mill liners, bucket edges and chutes. Because the hardness comes with a very high carbon equivalent, it is also the hardest to cut, bend and weld — so it should be specified only where lower NM grades wear out too fast.

02Technical Specifications

What this page publishes, and what must be confirmed on the mill certificate when you enquire.

Item Specification
Executive Standard GB/T 24186 (Chinese national standard for abrasion-resistant steel plates for construction and machinery). NM = NaiMo (wear-resistant); the grade has no single ASTM or EN equivalent, but Hardox 600, JFE EH600 and DILLIDUR 600V are trade equivalents at ~600 HBW
Steel Grade NM600 (nominal 600 HBW)
Steel Category Abrasion resistant / wear plate, extreme-duty
Product Form Hot-rolled plate, quenched and tempered (Q+T)
Thickness Range Typically 6 – 100 mm; GB/T 24186 covers a broad range and the exact rolled thickness is confirmed with the mill
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme; cut-to-length and cut-to-shape available
Thickness Covered by Published Data The whole standard range; the figures below are typical and mill-dependent
MOQ 1 ton (mixed sizes negotiable)
Lead Time by Quantity 1 – 10 t: about 5 days; 10 – 50 t: about 10 days; > 50 t: negotiable
Payment Terms L/C, T/T, D/P, Western Union, Paypal, Money Gram
Processing Services Cutting (laser / plasma / water-jet), bending, drilling, welding, surface preparation
Certification Mill test certificate (MTC) with hardness and ladle analysis; third-party inspection on request
NM600 is a standard grade, but only its hardness is guaranteed. GB/T 24186 fixes the 570 – 640 HBW delivery band. Chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are mill-typical values and vary by producer — confirm the exact composition and mechanicals on the MTC of the lot you buy.

03How to Read the Grade

The three characters tell you the product family and the hardness; they tell you nothing about chemistry or welding behaviour.

Part Meaning
NM NaiMo (wear-resistant) — the plate is made to resist sliding and impact wear, not to carry structural load as its primary job
600 Nominal Brinell hardness, 600 HBW. The real delivery band is 570 – 640 HBW

Where NM600 sits in the Chinese NM wear-plate ladder

Grade Nominal HBW Typical delivered band (guide) Use when
NM400 400 ~360 – 440 HBW Moderate wear, easier forming and welding
NM450 450 ~410 – 480 HBW Moderate-to-heavy wear
NM500 500 ~460 – 540 HBW Heavy sliding / impact, the common workhorse
NM550 550 ~520 – 580 HBW Severe wear, limited forming
NM600 600 570 – 640 HBW (guaranteed) Extreme abrasion, minimal forming
Harder is not always better. Only NM600's 570 – 640 HBW is a guaranteed delivery window quoted from GB/T 24186; the lower-grade bands above are nominal / representative and mill-dependent. Each step up the ladder is harder to cut, bend and weld — pick the lowest grade that survives your wear duty.

04Chemical Composition

Because NM600 is made to a hardness target, the analysis below is a typical window seen across major GB/T 24186 producers. Your heat's real chemistry is on its MTC.

Element Typical Content (max unless noted), %
C 0.30 – 0.55 (high, for wear hardness)
Mn ≤ 1.60
Si ≤ 0.70
Cr ≤ 1.50
Mo ≤ 0.60
Ni ≤ 1.00
Ti / Nb ≤ 0.05 (optional, grain refinement)
B ≤ 0.005
P ≤ 0.020
S ≤ 0.010
Carbon Equivalent (CEV) about 0.80 (typical) — high, drives welding preheat
Processing Fine-grained, aluminium-killed; quenched and tempered
The chemistry is mill-dependent. Different producers reach the same 570 – 640 HBW with different recipes, so these figures are a representative range, not a guaranteed composition. Specify and verify against the MTC of the lot you receive.

05Mechanical Properties & Tolerance

Only the hardness is a guaranteed delivery property. The rest are typical values for design reference.

Property Value Status
Surface / bulk hardness 570 – 640 HBW Guaranteed (the only guaranteed item, per GB/T 24186)
Yield strength about 1250 MPa (181 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Tensile strength about 1550 MPa (225 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Elongation A5 about 8 – 12 % Typical
Charpy V-notch impact grade / heat-dependent; where specified typically 20 – 40 J at low temperature Typical / not guaranteed

Thickness tolerance, flatness and surface

Item Requirement
Thickness Tolerance Per producing mill standard (commonly 0 / + per mm of thickness); exact value on the MTC
Flatness Per mill standard / EN 10051-class acceptance where agreed
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme
Surface Quality Per mill standard; descaled and inspected before despatch
Hardness is the only number you can rely on. NM600 is sold and accepted on its Brinell band. Yield, tensile and impact are useful for estimating, but any of them used in a calculation must come from a test on the delivered lot, not from this page.

06Wear Service and Thickness Selection

NM600 is the top of the NM wear ladder — a pure abrasion-resistant plate. Choose a thickness from the wear duty, not from the hardness number.

Wear-service guidance (by duty, not by a table)

Duty How the thickness is chosen
Mining truck-body / dump liners Set by the wear rate you can tolerate and the liner you can fit; 20 – 40 mm is common for aggressive ores
Excavator buckets / cutting edges Set by impact energy and the weld-on profile; confirm fit before cutting
Crushers / mills / grinders Set by feed size and throughput; thicker plate where impact is concentrated
Chutes / hoppers / transfer points Set by the abrasiveness and velocity of the flowing material
Reserve NM600 for the worst wear. It is the hardest to cut, bend and weld in the NM family, so use it only where NM500 / NM550 wear out too quickly. If a lower grade survives the duty, it will be cheaper to fabricate and weld.

07Processing & Fabrication Guidelines

It is the hardest NM grade, with a very high carbon equivalent — so the workshop rules are the strict high-hardness ones.

Topic Guideline
Further Heat Treatment Not intended. Supplied quenched and tempered; any anneal or re-quench lowers hardness and toughness
Cold Bending Very limited and springy; use a large minimum bend radius (several times t) and a sample bend before tooling is committed
Cutting Laser, plasma and water-jet are the practical routes; water-jet best preserves the cut edge. Mechanical shearing needs heavy-duty, hardened tooling
Welding Weldable but very high carbon-equivalent (CEV ~0.8): preheat (around 150 – 200 °C), low-hydrogen consumables, controlled interpass; qualify the procedure for your thickness. Austenitic fillers reduce the hard-zone cracking risk
Machining Carbide-tipped tools, rigid set-up, low speed and high feed, ample coolant
Workshop Safety Cutting and grinding make fine steel dust — wear suitable respiratory protection
Do not take a welding or bending number from a web page. The right preheat, consumable and bend radius depend on the exact heat and thickness. Tell us the operation and we will confirm the parameter set before you cut steel.

08Typical Applications

Where the hardest, flattest wear plate does the work.

Mining Truck & Dumper Liners

Body, tailgate and hopper liners that take constant sliding and impact from rock and aggregate.

Bucket & Cutting Edges

Excavator and loader buckets, cutting edges and wear bars where impact is concentrated.

Crushers & Mills

Concaves, mantles, liners and grinding plates in crushing and milling plant.

Chutes & Hoppers

Transfer points and bins where flowing material erodes the wall.

Scraper & Conveyor Flights

Flight bars, scraper blades and conveyor wear parts in bulk handling.

Earthmoving Wear Parts

Ground-engaging and high-abrasion components for construction and mining equipment.

Selection advice: start from the wear duty, not from the hardness number. NM600 is the hardest grade in the NM family — specify it only where NM500 / NM550 wear out too fast, and where you can live with its high welding preheat and limited forming.

09Processing, Testing & Supply

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Is NM600 a national standard grade (like GB/T 24186)?
Yes. NM600 is defined by GB/T 24186, the Chinese national standard for abrasion-resistant steel plates for construction and machinery. NM = NaiMo ("wear-resistant"); 600 = nominal 600 HBW. It is not an ASTM or EN grade, but Hardox 600, JFE EH600 and DILLIDUR 600V are trade equivalents at the same hardness.
Q2570-640 HBW, or exactly 600?
Both are correct in their context. 600 is the nominal grade name; 570-640 HBW is the hardness band producers must deliver and guarantee per GB/T 24186. Order and inspect against the delivered band, not the round number.
Q3What are the equivalent grades to NM600?
Hardox 600 (SSAB), JFE EH600 (JFE Steel) and DILLIDUR 600V (Dillinger) are all ~600 HBW wear plates. Chemistry, dimensions and test routines differ between mills, so confirm true equivalence on the mill test certificate rather than by name alone.
Q4Can NM600 be welded?
Yes, but it has a very high carbon equivalent (CEV ~0.8). Welding needs preheat of around 150-200 deg C, low-hydrogen consumables and a qualified procedure for the thickness; austenitic fillers reduce the hard-zone cracking risk. It is delivered quenched and tempered and is not meant for further heat treatment.
Q5How do I choose the thickness?
From the wear duty, not the hardness number. NM600 is the hardest to process in the NM family, so reserve it for the most severe abrasion where NM500 / NM550 wear out; use a thinner section wherever feasible to keep fabrication and welding manageable.
Q6What quantity, how fast, what paperwork?
From 1 ton, with typical lead times of about 5 days for 1-10 t, about 10 days for 10-50 t and negotiable above 50 t. Each heat ships with an MTC carrying hardness and ladle analysis; third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
Sources and limits: the figures on this page are reference information drawn from GB/T 24186 and published abrasion-resistant steel literature and producer data sheets. NM600 is defined by GB/T 24186; hardness (570-640 HBW) is the guaranteed property, while chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are typical and mill-dependent and must be confirmed on the mill test certificate of the lot supplied. NM600 is a pure abrasion-resistant (wear) plate — any ballistic-protection use is a different product and is not warranted by this page. BBN supplies, cuts and processes the plate.
