Product Introduction

01Product Overview

Plate Bolt Stock GB/T 3077 35CrMo

GB/T 3077 35CrMo is a Chinese chromium-molybdenum alloy structural steel. The leading digits "35" mark the nominal carbon level of about 0.35%, and the Cr and Mo that follow are the elements that do the work: chromium carries hardenability and temper resistance, molybdenum holds strength at temperature and suppresses temper embrittlement.

It is bought for one reason — what it delivers after quenching and tempering. The standard figures of 835 MPa yield and 980 MPa tensile belong to a heat-treated 25 mm test blank, not to every section you can buy, so the delivery condition and the mechanical values you need belong in the purchase order. BBN supplies plate with full heat analysis and an MTC.

03Grade Designation & Meaning

The Chinese designation states carbon level first, then the alloying elements, and nothing else.

35

35 — Carbon Level

Roughly 0.35% carbon (100 × C%); the GB/T 3077 band for this grade is 0.32 – 0.40%. It is a nominal figure, not a guaranteed analysis.

Cr

Cr — Chromium

0.80 – 1.10%. Chromium raises hardenability so thicker sections still harden through, adds temper resistance and gives moderate oxidation resistance at temperature.

Mo

Mo — Molybdenum

0.15 – 0.25%. Molybdenum keeps strength and creep resistance at elevated temperature and counteracts temper embrittlement.

GB

The Cr-Mo Ladder

Same alloy pattern, rising carbon: 30CrMo → 35CrMo (this page) → 42CrMo. Strength attainable after Q&T climbs with the carbon digit while weldability becomes more demanding.

Reading the name correctly: the two leading digits are rounded from the carbon content — they are not a strength value in MPa or ksi. The designation also says nothing about delivery condition, which has to be agreed and stated on the MTC.

04Equivalent & Comparable Grades

Where this grade sits in the major standard systems. Comparable means a similar alloy design, not an automatic substitute.

Standard System Grade
China GB/T 3077 35CrMo this page
Japan JIS G4053 SCM435 SCM435H for guaranteed hardenability
USA AISI / SAE 4135 4137 UNS G41350 / G41370
Europe EN 10083-3 34CrMo4 1.7220; 34CrMoS4 = 1.7226
Germany DIN 17200 34CrMo4
International ISO 683-2 34CrMo4
France AFNOR NF 34CD4 35CD4
United Kingdom BS 970 708A37
Russia GOST 34KhM 35KhM
Italy UNI / Sweden SS 34CrMo4 2234
Overlapping, not identical: 34CrMo4 allows carbon 0.30 – 0.37% against 35CrMo 0.32 – 0.40%, and its chromium and molybdenum windows are wider (Cr 0.90 – 1.20%, Mo 0.15 – 0.30%). SCM435 carries more manganese (0.60 – 0.90% against 0.40 – 0.70%), which shifts hardenability. Name the ordering standard on the PO and have every mechanical value re-verified after substitution.

05Chemical Composition

Cast (heat) analysis. The source column separates what this product page publishes from the GB/T 3077 limits published for the grade.

Element Limit (%) Source
C (Carbon) 0.32 – 0.40 Product data sheet
Si (Silicon) 0.17 – 0.37 Product data sheet
Mn (Manganese) 0.40 – 0.70 Product data sheet
P (Phosphorus) 0.030 max Product data sheet
S (Sulfur) 0.030 max Product data sheet
Cr (Chromium) 0.80 – 1.10 Product data sheet
Mo (Molybdenum) 0.15 – 0.25 Product data sheet
Cu (Copper) 0.30 max Product data sheet
Ni (Nickel) 0.30 max GB/T 3077 residual limit
Two points: the nickel row is not printed on this product page — GB/T 3077 carries it as a residual limit of 0.30%. And the phosphorus and sulfur ceiling circulates as both 0.030% (kept here) and 0.035% (the GB/T 3077 residual allowance); state the ceiling you want when the steel goes into low-temperature or safety-critical service.

06Mechanical Properties

Values published for this product, given per thickness band.

Grade Thickness t (mm) Yield ReL (MPa, min) Tensile Rm (MPa, min) Hardness HB
35CrMo 6 – 50 835 980 —
35CrMo 50 – 200 835 980 —
Read these two rows carefully: 835 and 980 MPa are the values GB/T 3077 publishes for a 25 mm test blank after quenching and tempering — not a guarantee for every thickness you can buy, since strength drops as the ruling section grows. The hardness column is empty in the source table; GB/T 3077 separately gives ≤ 229 HB annealed, with A ≥ 12%, Z ≥ 45% and AkV ≥ 63 J on the standard piece.

07Heat Treatment & Delivery Condition

35CrMo reaches its specified properties through heat treatment, so the cycle belongs in the enquiry.

Item Published / Practised Value
Quenching 850 °C, oil quench
Tempering 550 °C, water or oil cool
Temper Embrittlement First-type (irreversible) temper brittleness — do not temper in roughly 250 – 400 °C; cool through the 450 – 650 °C range quickly to avoid the reversible kind
Elevated Temperature Long-term service up to about 500 °C with useful creep strength retained
Low Temperature Good low-temperature toughness; −100 °C is the figure published here, −110 °C appears in other references
Weldability Poor to moderate — carbon equivalent is commonly quoted near 0.72%. Preheat to 150 – 400 °C and apply post-weld heat treatment to relieve stress
Delivery Condition As Rolled (AR) Annealed Normalized (N) High-temperature Tempered Quenched & Tempered (Q+T)
Note: GB/T 3077 leaves the delivery condition to be agreed — heat treated or untreated — and requires it in the contract. The quench and temper temperatures above are the commonly published reference cycle, not a specification requirement; the carbon equivalent figure depends on which formula is used, so validate preheat against your welding procedure specification.

08Typical Applications

Where quenched and tempered 35CrMo is consumed.

Mill Gears

Rolling mill gearing and heavy drive gears that take impact, bending and high surface load.

Crankshafts & Connecting Rods

Dynamically loaded engine parts where fatigue strength matters as much as static strength.

Vehicle Transmission & Axles

Engine spindles, axles and transmission parts in vehicles and engines.

High-Strength Fasteners

Boiler bolts for service below 400 °C and nuts below 510 °C.

High-Pressure Pipe

Thick-walled seamless conduit for chemical machinery at 450 – 500 °C in non-corrosive media.

Selection advice: order to the property requirement rather than to the grade name — state strength class, hardness range, impact requirement with its temperature, UT acceptance level and the delivery condition together.

09Processing, Testing & Supply

From mill plate to certified, machined item.

1

Cutting & Machining

Plate cut to length and width or profiled to drawing; machining support arranged for shafts, gears and fastener stock.

2

Heat Treatment

Annealing, normalizing, high-temperature tempering or full quench and temper to the mechanical targets you specify.

3

Inspection

Chemical analysis, tensile test, hardness, impact where specified and UT carried out per heat; third-party inspection supported on request.

4

Certified Delivery

MTC issued with each heat, packed for export and shipped within the agreed lead time.

Quote checklist — faster if you send: product form (plate or round bar), thickness × width × length, quantity, delivery condition (AR, annealed, normalized, tempered or Q+T), required mechanical values (yield, tensile, elongation, impact with temperature, hardness), UT acceptance level, MTC type, destination port and preferred payment terms.

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Is 35CrMo the same as AISI 4135, AISI 4137 or 34CrMo4?
They are the same alloy family with overlapping but not identical windows: 34CrMo4 allows carbon 0.30 – 0.37% against 35CrMo 0.32 – 0.40%, and its chromium and molybdenum ranges are wider. Substitution is an engineering decision, not a paperwork one — name the ordering standard on the PO and re-verify the mechanical values after heat treatment.
Q2Do 835 and 980 MPa hold for the whole 6 – 200 mm range?
Not automatically. Those are the values GB/T 3077 publishes for a 25 mm test blank after quenching and tempering. As the ruling section grows, achievable strength drops, so heavy plate has to be agreed against the section you actually machine. Write the acceptance values into the order instead of relying on the band alone.
Q3Is the tensile figure 980 or 985 MPa?
Both circulate. This page keeps 980 MPa, the value published with the product; widely used Chinese references quote ≥ 985 MPa for the same grade. The difference comes from edition and rounding — state which one your specification calls up and check it against the MTC.
Q4What does welding 35CrMo require?
It is not an easy welding steel. The carbon equivalent is commonly quoted near 0.72%, standard practice is preheat to 150 – 400 °C followed by post-weld heat treatment to relieve stress. Set the exact preheat and interpass temperatures from your welding procedure specification and the section thickness — not from a product page.
Q5Should I choose 30CrMo, 35CrMo or 42CrMo?
Same Cr-Mo family, rising carbon and strength: 30CrMo is the more weldable, lower-strength option, 35CrMo (this page) is the general-purpose high-strength choice, and 42CrMo reaches higher strength with tighter welding control and better hardenability in heavy sections. Pick by the property you must hit, then by how much welding the fabrication needs.
Q6What is the minimum quantity and how fast can you ship?
From 1 ton, with published lead times of 5 days for 1 – 10 t, 10 days for 10 – 50 t and negotiable above 50 t. Dimensions are confirmed against the rolling programme, and each heat ships with an MTC; third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
