API 5L PSL2 X80 — designated X80N in US customary units and L555N in the SI system — is an ultra-high strength carbon steel line pipe for long-distance, high-pressure, large-diameter transmission of gas, water and oil, supplied to product specification level 2. The specified minimum yield strength is 555 MPa (80,000 psi) with a maximum of 705 MPa, and the tensile strength runs 625 to 825 MPa, with the yield-to-tensile ratio held to 0.93 maximum.
X80 is bought when the line is pressure-governed at the top of the strength range and the project wants the PSL2 package with it: mandatory Charpy V-notch impact testing, tighter chemical limits than PSL1 (C 0.22 max, P 0.025 max, S 0.015 max on the source data sheet) with carbon-equivalent control, extended non-destructive testing and stricter traceability. It is supplied seamless and welded, in bare or coated condition, and is the material specified for cross-regional oil and gas trunk lines, offshore pipelines and key national energy infrastructure.
