Line pipe to ANSI / API Specification 5L for the petroleum and natural gas industries — seamless and welded (SAW, ERW, CDW) pipe conveying gas, water and oil, supplied from Grade A25 up to X80 under product specification level PSL1 or PSL2.
API 5L is the American Petroleum Institute specification for line pipe — the steel pipe used in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It covers seamless pipe and welded pipe (SAW, ERW and CDW), and it is specified to convey gas, water, oil and other liquids. Line pipe is bought to move a fluid under pressure over distance rather than to carry a calculated building load, so what gets specified is the strength level (the grade), the size and wall, the specification level (PSL1 or PSL2), and the inspection and coating package.
The grade name carries the strength. In the X grades the number is the specified minimum yield strength in thousands of psi — X60 is the 60,000 psi rung — and the same pipe is written L415 in the SI designation, where 415 is that same requirement in MPa. Below the X series sit the letter grades Grade A and Grade B, with Grade A25 at the bottom of the range. Section 05 sets out the whole ladder with the yield and tensile figure for every rung.

An API 5L designation packs the strength, the unit system and — under PSL2 — the delivery condition into one short string. Once you know the convention you can read a grade name straight off a pipe stencil or a mill certificate.
In the X grades the number is the specified minimum yield strength in thousands of pounds per square inch — X42 is the 42,000 psi rung, X60 the 60,000 psi rung, X70 the 70,000 psi rung. It is a floor, not a target: pipe is accepted at or above it.
Every X grade also has an SI name in which L stands for line pipe and the number is the specified minimum yield strength in MPa — X42 is L290, X60 is L415, X70 is L485. The two names describe the same pipe, which makes the grade name a direct cross-check on the yield figure quoted on a certificate.
Below the X series sit Grade A (L210) and Grade B (L245), carried over from the older designation and still widely ordered for water and low-pressure gas. Grade A25 (L175) is a separate grade at the bottom of the range and is offered under PSL1 only.
The product specification level follows the grade and sets the requirement set — chemistry, testing, NDT and traceability — not the strength. PSL1 Grade B and PSL2 Grade B sit on the same rung of the ladder and are ordered to two different requirement sets. Section 06 sets out the difference.
PSL2 grades carry a suffix for the delivery condition: R as-rolled, N normalizing rolled / normalized / normalized and tempered, Q quenched and tempered, M thermomechanical rolled or formed. S is added for sour service and O for offshore service. See section 07.

The technical committee recognised that there are two basic levels of technical requirement for line pipe and developed PSL1 and PSL2. Both apply to every grade on the ladder.

Under PSL2 the delivery condition moves into the grade name itself. Because the different delivery conditions carry different chemical and mechanical requirements, the suffix has to be part of the order description.

API 5L covers seamless line pipe and welded line pipe. Which route applies is set by the diameter, the wall and the service — not by the grade, because every grade is produced by more than one route.
