01What API 5L Line Pipe Is

API 5L is the American Petroleum Institute specification for line pipe — the steel pipe used in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It covers seamless pipe and welded pipe (SAW, ERW and CDW), and it is specified to convey gas, water, oil and other liquids. Line pipe is bought to move a fluid under pressure over distance rather than to carry a calculated building load, so what gets specified is the strength level (the grade), the size and wall, the specification level (PSL1 or PSL2), and the inspection and coating package.

The grade name carries the strength. In the X grades the number is the specified minimum yield strength in thousands of psi — X60 is the 60,000 psi rung — and the same pipe is written L415 in the SI designation, where 415 is that same requirement in MPa. Below the X series sit the letter grades Grade A and Grade B, with Grade A25 at the bottom of the range. Section 05 sets out the whole ladder with the yield and tensile figure for every rung.

The suffix is part of the grade, not an afterthought. PSL2 X60N, PSL2 X60Q, PSL2 X60M and PSL2 X60QS are four different order descriptions — the delivery condition changes the chemical composition and the mechanical property requirements, so the suffix your project calls up has to be stated on the enquiry. 04How to Read the Grade Designation

An API 5L designation packs the strength, the unit system and — under PSL2 — the delivery condition into one short string. Once you know the convention you can read a grade name straight off a pipe stencil or a mill certificate.

X

X + Number: Minimum Yield in ksi

In the X grades the number is the specified minimum yield strength in thousands of pounds per square inch — X42 is the 42,000 psi rung, X60 the 60,000 psi rung, X70 the 70,000 psi rung. It is a floor, not a target: pipe is accepted at or above it.

L

L + Number: The Same Pipe in MPa

Every X grade also has an SI name in which L stands for line pipe and the number is the specified minimum yield strength in MPa — X42 is L290, X60 is L415, X70 is L485. The two names describe the same pipe, which makes the grade name a direct cross-check on the yield figure quoted on a certificate.

The Letter Grades

Below the X series sit Grade A (L210) and Grade B (L245), carried over from the older designation and still widely ordered for water and low-pressure gas. Grade A25 (L175) is a separate grade at the bottom of the range and is offered under PSL1 only.

PSL

PSL1 and PSL2

The product specification level follows the grade and sets the requirement set — chemistry, testing, NDT and traceability — not the strength. PSL1 Grade B and PSL2 Grade B sit on the same rung of the ladder and are ordered to two different requirement sets. Section 06 sets out the difference.

R/N/Q/M

The PSL2 Suffix Letter

PSL2 grades carry a suffix for the delivery condition: R as-rolled, N normalizing rolled / normalized / normalized and tempered, Q quenched and tempered, M thermomechanical rolled or formed. S is added for sour service and O for offshore service. See section 07.

One caution on the two numbers: the L value is the rounded SI figure of the same requirement, not a conversion you can do backwards — X60 is specified at 60,200 psi and written L415 MPa. Treat the X number and the L number as two labels for one requirement, and check the unit before comparing a certificate value against a grade name.

How to read this table: these are the PSL1 minimum values for the pipe body — standard series figures, listed so you can see where each rung sits. They are floors, not typical values: pipe is accepted at or above them, and the measured values for your heat are what appear on the MTC. PSL2 adds a maximum yield and a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio on top of these minima, and the limits move with diameter, wall and the edition called up in your purchase order. Higher grades than X80 exist — X90 and X100 are named in the specification — but they sit outside the range normally stocked; tell us if your project calls for one and we will confirm availability. No elongation figure is quoted here: for line pipe elongation is calculated from the tensile strength and the specimen dimensions under the standard and is reported on the certificate rather than ordered as a fixed number.

06PSL1 vs PSL2: The Two Specification Levels

The technical committee recognised that there are two basic levels of technical requirement for line pipe and developed PSL1 and PSL2. Both apply to every grade on the ladder.

We deliberately do not fill in PSL2 numbers here. The exact PSL2 limits — carbon-equivalent values, impact test temperatures and absorbed energies, the extent of NDT — are set by the edition of API Specification 5L or ISO 3183 that your purchase order calls up, and they change between editions. Quoting a figure from one edition against a project built to another is how a certificate gets rejected, so we quote against the document your project invokes. Tell us the level and the edition and we will price to that.

07PSL2 Delivery Condition Suffixes

Under PSL2 the delivery condition moves into the grade name itself. Because the different delivery conditions carry different chemical and mechanical requirements, the suffix has to be part of the order description.

S Sour service (added to the suffix above) Pipe ordered for sour service — H2S-containing fluid — with the additional hardness and cracking-resistance requirements that service brings. Appears in section 03 as the QS row.
O Offshore service (added to the suffix above) Pipe ordered for offshore service, covering the additional requirements for offshore pipelines. Appears in section 03 as the MO row.
Why this matters commercially: ordering “PSL2 X60” with no suffix leaves the delivery condition open, and that is the single most common cause of a quotation that does not match what the project actually needs. The service suffixes combine with the delivery-condition letters rather than replacing them — offshore and sour service each appear with more than one base condition — so state the full designation, level, grade, suffix and any service suffix, on your enquiry.

08Manufacturing Types

API 5L covers seamless line pipe and welded line pipe. Which route applies is set by the diameter, the wall and the service — not by the grade, because every grade is produced by more than one route.

Route also drives inspection: a weld seam has to be examined and a seamless body does not, so the non-destructive testing package differs by route even when the grade, the size and the PSL level are identical. Give us the diameter and wall and we will confirm which routes can produce it and what inspection each one carries.

Q1What does a grade like X60 mean, and is it the same as L415?
Yes — X60 and L415 are two designations of the same pipe. X60 is the US customary name, where the number is the specified minimum yield strength in thousands of psi: 60 ksi, specified at 60,200 psi. L415 is the SI name, where L stands for line pipe and 415 is the same requirement in MPa. Minimum tensile strength at that rung is 520 MPa. Q2Do I need PSL1 or PSL2?
Both levels exist for every grade on the ladder. PSL1 is the baseline — basic chemical limits, tensile and hydrostatic testing, standard documentation. Yes, if you are ordering PSL2. Q4Should I order seamless or welded?
It is set by diameter, wall and service rather than by grade. Seamless comes from a solid billet with no weld seam and is the usual choice for small diameters, heavy walls and high-pressure service. ERW is the standard route for small and medium diameters, SAW (longitudinal or spiral) covers large diameters and heavy walls, and CDW gives tighter dimensional tolerance and a smoother bore. The inspection package differs by route as well — a weld seam has to be examined. Send the diameter and wall and we will confirm which routes can produce it.
Q5Which grade do I need — B, X42, X52, X60, X65 or X70?
It comes out of the design pressure, the diameter and the fluid. Grade B and X42 cover water and low-pressure distribution; X52 and X56 are the medium-pressure workhorses; X60 and X65 are where wall-thickness economy starts to pay for the higher tonne price; X70 and X80 are long-distance high-pressure trunk-line grades. Higher is not automatically better — the higher rungs tighten chemistry and welding control and cost more per tonne, so the right grade is the lowest one that meets the design pressure with a wall you can actually weld and lay.
