01Product Overview

L245 GRADE B API 5L PSL1 LINE PIPE

API 5L PSL1 Grade B — also designated L245 in the SI system — is the most widely used general-purpose carbon steel line pipe for the petroleum and natural gas industries’ pipeline transportation systems. It adopts the PSL1 specification with a stable chemical composition and basic mechanical properties, and it is the grade of choice for conventional low and medium-pressure fluid transmission projects: minimum yield strength 245 MPa, minimum tensile strength 415 MPa.

We supply the full range of API 5L PSL1 Grade B line pipe across every manufacturing route — seamless (SMLS), ERW, HFW, LFW and SAW welded, plus fabricated and CDW — in nominal pipe sizes from 1/2" to 48" OD. With good crack resistance, reliable structural stability and cost performance, Grade B PSL1 is the mainstream choice for conventional oil, gas and water transmission pipelines worldwide: it is the grade you specify when the line is not pressure-governed enough to justify paying for an X-grade alloy design, and the carbon level (0.28 max) and manganese level (1.20 max) stay inside limits that keep the pipe straightforward to weld in the field.

03Grade Designation

Grade B carries two names — a letter grade in the US customary system and an L-number in the SI system — and only the second one carries the strength figure.

Designation Segment Meaning in API Specification 5L
B The letter grade — Grade B is the higher of the two letter grades (Grade A / Grade B) at the bottom of the API 5L strength ladder. Unlike the X grades, the letter itself does not encode the yield strength
L245 The SI designation of the same grade — L for line pipe, 245 for a specified minimum yield strength of 245 MPa
245 MPa Specified minimum yield strength — approximately 35,500 psi when converted. This is the figure quoted on the mill certificate and the basis of the pipe’s pressure rating
415 MPa Specified minimum tensile strength — approximately 60,200 psi when converted
PSL1 Product Specification Level 1 — see chapter 04 for what the level changes
Note: Grade B and L245 are the same pipe: the letter is the traditional US name and the L-number is the SI name, where the number is the specified minimum yield strength in MPa. Because the letter does not carry a number, the L-number is the one to quote when you are matching a line design to a strength requirement. The designation breakdown above is standard background for this grade family.

04Product Specification Level: PSL1 & PSL2

Every API 5L grade, Grade B included, can be ordered under either of two product specification levels. This page documents PSL1; PSL2 is supplied to the same grade on request.

Item PSL1 PSL2
Charpy V-Notch impact test Not a PSL1 requirement — CVN impact testing is the PSL2 line pipe requirement Mandatory CVN impact testing
Chemical composition Basic maximum limits (C, Mn, P, S and the agreed residual limits) Tighter limits, plus carbon-equivalent control
Inspection & NDT The applicable inspection for the manufacturing route Extended mandatory non-destructive testing
Traceability & documentation Standard mill documentation Stricter traceability and certification package
Note: The chemical and mechanical data on this page are the PSL1 values for Grade B as given in the source data sheet. PSL2 Grade B is available on request, but the exact PSL2 limits and test package are set by the edition of API Specification 5L (or ISO 3183) called up in your purchase order — tell us the level and the edition your project invokes and we will quote against that document.

05Chemical Composition

Chemical composition of API 5L PSL1 Grade B seamless pipe, given as maximum % on the basis of the source data sheet.

Grade C max. Mn max. P max. S max. V max. Nb max. Ti max.
API 5L PSL1 Grade B (seamless) 0.28 1.20 0.030 0.030 c,d c,d d
Note: The footnote markers are the ones carried in the source data sheet. a caps the residual elements at Cu ≤ 0.50%, Ni ≤ 0.50%, Cr ≤ 0.50% and Mo ≤ 0.15%. c means that, unless otherwise agreed, Nb + V ≤ 0.06%. d means Nb + V + Ti ≤ 0.15%. So the V and Nb columns carry no individual maximum of their own — they are controlled through those combined limits, and Ti through the d limit alone. With carbon held at 0.28 max and manganese at 1.20 max, Grade B reaches its 245 MPa minimum yield without leaning on micro-alloying, which is exactly why it welds and forms so predictably in the field. The figures above are the seamless pipe composition given in the source; welded pipe to the same grade is supplied to the limits of the applicable table of the standard and is reported on the mill certificate.

06Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties of API 5L PSL1 Grade B (L245) seamless pipe, in SI units with the US customary equivalents.

Pipe Grade Yield Strength Rt0.5 Min (MPa) Yield Strength Min (psi, converted) Tensile Strength Rm Min (MPa) Tensile Strength Min (psi, converted)
L245 or Grade B 245 ~35,500 415 ~60,200
Note: The source data sheet specifies minimum values only — 245 MPa minimum yield and 415 MPa minimum tensile — and does not give an elongation figure or an upper yield limit for this grade, so no elongation or maximum value is quoted here rather than inventing one. The psi figures are straight unit conversions of those MPa minima. Elongation for line pipe is calculated from the tensile strength and the specimen dimensions under the standard, and PSL1 does not require Charpy V-notch impact testing; where your project specifies elongation minima or impact energy, those are agreed in the purchase order and reported on the mill certificate for the pipe supplied.

07Manufacturing Types & Delivery Conditions

Grade B is the grade that every mill runs — it is produced by every standard line pipe manufacturing route, which is why it is also the most readily available and the most cost-effective.

Manufacturing Type What It Means
Seamless Produced from a solid billet with no weld seam — the route the chemical and mechanical data on this page refer to
ERW Electric-resistance welded — the standard route for small and medium diameters
HFW High-frequency welded — a high-frequency induction weld for consistent seam quality at production speed
LFW Low-frequency welded — the low-frequency variant used on the sizes and walls it suits
SAW Welded Submerged-arc welded, longitudinally or helically from plate or strip — the route for larger diameters and heavier walls
Fabricated Fabricated to order for sizes or wall thicknesses outside the standard mill programme
CDW Cold drawn welded — cold finishing for tighter dimensional tolerance and a smoother bore

API 5L PSL1 line pipe can be delivered in as-rolled, normalizing rolled, thermomechanical rolled, thermomechanical formed, normalizing formed, normalized, normalized and tempered, or quenched and tempered condition:

As-Rolled Normalizing Rolled Thermomechanical Rolled Thermomechanical Formed Normalizing Formed Normalized Normalized & Tempered Quenched & Tempered

Note: The full set of eight conditions above is what the specification permits; the specification table in chapter 02 lists the four most commonly supplied for Grade B — as-rolled, normalized, thermomechanical rolled / formed and quenched & tempered. The delivery condition is not fixed by the grade alone — it is agreed between buyer and mill for each order and is stated on the MTC. Tell us the service, the diameter and wall and the required mechanical properties, and we will quote the condition that satisfies them.

08Inspection & Testing

The tests carried out on API 5L PSL1 Grade B line pipe, and what each one covers.

Test Item Test Purpose
Chemical Product Analysis Ensures the chemical composition of the finished pipe fully complies with API 5L PSL1 limits — reported on the mill certificate
Tensile & Bend Test Verifies the 245 MPa minimum yield and 415 MPa minimum tensile strength, plus the basic ductility of the pipe body and weld
Hydrostatic Pressure Test Guarantees pipeline pressure resistance and overall tightness — every length is pressure tested to the level required by the standard
Flattening Test Checks pipe body uniformity and eliminates internal defects, applied per the applicable clause for the manufacturing route
MT & NDT Non-destructive Testing Magnetic particle and non-destructive examination remove surface and internal microscopic defects from the seam, the pipe ends and repaired areas
CVN impact test Charpy V-notch impact test — specified for PSL2 line pipe, not a PSL1 requirement, and available for PSL1 when your project requires it
Note: Which of these tests apply depends on the manufacturing route, the diameter and wall, the PSL level and your purchase order — not on the grade alone. Tell us the specification and inspection class your project invokes and we will confirm the exact test package and issue the MTC, EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 and the full API standard inspection reports with the delivery.

09Applications & Typical Uses

API 5L PSL1 Grade B is the general-duty grade — it is specified wherever conventional oil, gas, water or other liquids have to be moved at low to medium pressure.

Oil Transmission

Conventional low and medium-pressure crude oil and product transmission lines, gathering lines and field flowlines.

Natural Gas Pipelines

Low and medium-pressure natural gas transmission and distribution lines — the core duty of the API 5L grade family.

Water & Fluid Conveyance

Industrial water lines, conventional liquid and general fluid transmission systems built to a line pipe specification.

Urban Pipeline Projects

Urban pipeline supporting projects and municipal network work where a cost-effective general grade is specified.

Petrochemical Facilities

Conventional petrochemical pipeline facilities, plant utility lines, terminal and tank-farm piping on the same specification as the mainline.

Application Industry Typical Applications
Oil & Gas Industry Conventional low and medium-pressure oil and natural gas transmission pipelines
Fluid Conveyance Industrial water, conventional liquid and general fluid transmission systems
General Pipeline Engineering Urban pipeline supporting projects and conventional petrochemical pipeline facilities
Note: Grade B sits at the bottom of the API 5L strength ladder — Grade B (L245) at 245 MPa, X42 (L290) at 290 MPa, X52 (L360) at 360 MPa and X60 (L415) at 415 MPa minimum yield. Where the design pressure is low to medium and wall thickness is not critical, Grade B is the cheapest length that still carries a line pipe specification; where the line is pressure-governed and wall-thickness economy matters, stepping up to an X-grade pays for itself. Send us the design pressure, diameter and fluid and we will tell you which grade the line actually needs.

11Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions we are asked most often about API 5L PSL1 Grade B. For anything not covered here, send us your line schedule and specification.

Q1What does Grade B mean, and is it the same as L245?
Yes — Grade B and L245 are two designations of the same pipe. Grade B is the traditional US letter name, the higher of the two letter grades (Grade A / Grade B) at the bottom of the API 5L ladder; unlike the X grades, the letter does not encode the strength. L245 is the SI name, where 245 is the specified minimum yield strength in MPa. Minimum tensile strength is 415 MPa. When you are matching a design pressure to a grade, quote the L-number.
Q2Do I need PSL1 or PSL2?
Both levels exist for every API 5L grade, Grade B included. PSL1 is the baseline — basic chemical limits, tensile and hydrostatic testing, standard documentation — and it is what conventional low and medium-pressure oil, gas and water lines normally call up. PSL2 adds mandatory Charpy V-notch impact testing, tighter chemical limits with carbon-equivalent control, extended non-destructive testing and stricter traceability. Low-temperature, sour, offshore or high-consequence lines usually specify PSL2. Tell us the service and the edition your project invokes — PSL2 Grade B is supplied on request.
Q3What sizes, wall thicknesses and end finishes can you supply?
Line pipe sizes from NPS 1/2" to 48" O.D., with wall thickness in SCH 5, SCH 10, SCH 40, SCH 80, SCH 80S, SCH 160, SCH XS and SCH XXS. Ends are supplied plain, bevel, or screwed and threaded. Not every size is produced in every schedule and by every route, so send the outside diameter, schedule or wall thickness, length and end finish and we will confirm the exact item and its stock status.
Q4Which manufacturing types and delivery conditions are available?
Grade B is produced by every standard route: seamless (SMLS) from a solid billet with no weld seam, ERW electric-resistance welded, HFW high-frequency welded, LFW low-frequency welded, SAW submerged-arc welded for larger diameters and heavier walls, plus fabricated and CDW cold drawn welded. Delivery conditions commonly supplied are as-rolled, normalized, thermomechanical rolled / formed and quenched & tempered, and the full set permitted by the specification is listed in chapter 07. The condition is agreed per order and stated on the MTC.
Q5What tests and documents come with the pipe?
The test package covers chemical product analysis, tensile and bend test, hydrostatic pressure test, flattening test, and MT & NDT non-destructive testing; every length is hydrostatically tested. Documentation is the MTC with EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 and the full API standard inspection reports. CVN impact testing is a PSL2 requirement rather than a PSL1 one — tell us the inspection class you need and we will confirm the package.
Q6How does Grade B compare with X42, X52 and X60?
They are neighbours on the same API 5L ladder, differing mainly in specified minimum yield strength: Grade B (L245) at 245 MPa, X42 (L290) at 290 MPa, X52 (L360) at 360 MPa and X60 (L415) at 415 MPa, with minimum tensile rising in step. Size range, manufacturing routes, testing and coating options are handled the same way for all of them, so the choice is normally a pressure and wall-thickness calculation. Grade B is the most widely used general grade and the most cost-effective length for conventional low and medium-pressure service; step up only when the design pressure makes the thinner wall worth paying for. Send us the design pressure, diameter and fluid and we will size the grade for you.
