Product Introduction

01Product Overview

XAR WEAR PLATE 450 HBW

XAR 450 is an abrasion resistant steel from the XAR wear-plate family. XAR stands for eXtra Abrasion Resistant, a quenched-and-tempered (Q&T) plate brand originally developed by ThyssenKrupp. The number 450 is the nominal Brinell hardness in HBW, and XAR 450 is supplied to the XAR mill specification at a guaranteed delivery hardness of 420–480 HBW (guaranteed). It is a balanced moderate-to-heavy-duty grade — harder than XAR 400 for tougher wear, yet still reasonably formable and weldable, used where moderate sliding and impact wear would quickly wear out mild or low-alloy plate.

XAR 450 is chosen where wear would destroy ordinary structural or low-alloy plate, but where a higher-hardness grade would be over-specified and harder to cut, bend and weld. Typical jobs are truck-body and dumper liners, buckets, chutes, hoppers and ground-engaging parts in construction, quarrying, mining and bulk handling.

02Technical Specifications

What this page publishes, and what must be confirmed on the mill certificate when you enquire.

Item Specification
Executive Standard XAR mill specification (ThyssenKrupp abrasion-resistant brand). The grade is not an ASTM or EN grade by itself, but it is broadly comparable to EN 10051 delivery conditions and to the NM450 / Hardox 450 wear plates at the same hardness. BBN supplies it cut and processed to order.
Steel Grade XAR 450 (nominal 450 HBW)
Steel Category Abrasion resistant / wear plate, moderate-duty
Product Form Hot-rolled plate, quenched and tempered (Q+T)
Thickness Range Typically 4 – 120 mm; the exact rolled thickness is confirmed with the mill
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme; cut-to-length and cut-to-shape available
Thickness Covered by Published Data The whole standard range; the figures below are typical and mill-dependent
MOQ 1 ton (mixed sizes negotiable)
Lead Time by Quantity 1 – 10 t: about 5 days; 10 – 50 t: about 10 days; > 50 t: negotiable
Payment Terms L/C, T/T, D/P, Western Union, Paypal, Money Gram
Processing Services Cutting (laser / plasma / water-jet), bending, drilling, welding, surface preparation
Certification Mill test certificate (MTC) with hardness and ladle analysis; third-party inspection on request
Only the hardness is a guaranteed property. The XAR mill specification fixes XAR 450’s delivery hardness at 420–480 HBW (guaranteed); chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are mill-typical values and vary between producing mills — confirm the exact composition and mechanicals on the MTC of the lot you buy.

03How to Read the Grade

The two parts tell you the product family and the hardness; they tell you nothing about chemistry or welding behaviour.

Part Meaning
XAR eXtra Abrasion Resistant — the plate is made to resist sliding and impact wear, not to carry structural load as its primary job
450 Nominal Brinell hardness, 450 HBW. The real delivered band is the guaranteed 420–480 HBW.

Where XAR 450 sits in the XAR wear-plate ladder

Grade Nominal HBW Guaranteed delivery band Use when
XAR 400 400 370–430 HBW (guaranteed) Moderate wear, most formable and weldable
XAR 450 450 420–480 HBW (guaranteed) Moderate-to-heavy wear
XAR 500 500 470–530 HBW (guaranteed) Heavy sliding / impact wear
XAR 600 600 550–640 HBW (guaranteed) Extreme abrasion, minimal forming
Start at the lowest grade that survives the wear. a balanced moderate-to-heavy-duty grade — harder than XAR 400 for tougher wear, yet still reasonably formable and weldable. Step up the ladder only where XAR 450 wears out too quickly. Trade plates at the same hardness are NM450, Hardox 450, JFE EH450 and DILLIDUR 450V.

04Chemical Composition

Because XAR 450 is made to a hardness target, the analysis below is a typical window seen across XAR producers. Your heat’s real chemistry is on its MTC.

Element Typical Content (max unless noted), %%
C ≤ 0.22 (a little higher than XAR 400 for more wear life)
Si ≤ 0.80
Mn ≤ 1.60
P ≤ 0.025
S ≤ 0.010
Cr ≤ 1.00
Ni ≤ 0.80
Mo ≤ 0.50
B ≤ 0.005
Ti / Nb ≤ 0.050 (optional, grain refinement)
Carbon Equivalent (CEV) about 0.50 – 0.70 (typical)
Processing Fine-grained, vacuum-degassed; quenched and tempered
The chemistry is mill-dependent. Different producers reach the same nominal 450 HBW with different recipes, so these figures are a representative range, not a guaranteed composition. Specify and verify against the MTC of the lot you receive.

05Mechanical Properties & Tolerance

Only the hardness is a guaranteed delivery property. The rest are typical values for design reference.

Property Value Status
Surface / bulk hardness 420–480 HBW Guaranteed (per XAR mill specification)
Yield strength about 1100 MPa (160 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Tensile strength about 1350 – 1650 MPa (196 – 240 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Elongation A5 about 9 %% Typical
Charpy V-notch impact (-40 °C) about 25 J (typical) Typical / not guaranteed

Thickness tolerance, flatness and surface

Item Requirement
Thickness Tolerance Per producing mill standard (commonly 0 / + per mm of thickness); exact value on the MTC
Flatness Per mill standard / EN 10051-class acceptance where agreed
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme
Surface Quality Per mill standard; descaled and inspected before despatch
Hardness is the number you can rely on. XAR 450 is sold and accepted on its Brinell value (guaranteed at 420–480 HBW). Yield, tensile and impact are useful for estimating, but any of them used in a calculation must come from a test on the delivered lot, not from this page.

06Wear Service and Thickness Selection

XAR 450 is a moderate-duty abrasion plate. Choose a thickness from the wear duty, not from the hardness number.

Wear-service guidance (by duty, not by a table)

Duty How the thickness is chosen
Truck-body / dumper liners Set by the wear rate you can tolerate; 6 – 20 mm is common for moderate-duty bodies
Excavator buckets / cutting edges Set by impact energy and the weld-on profile; XAR 450 is weldable enough for most bucket rebuilds
Chutes / hoppers / transfer points Set by the abrasiveness and velocity of the flowing material
Ground-engaging / scraper parts Set by soil and aggregate abrasiveness; a good first choice where bending or welding is needed
Do not over-specify. If XAR 450 survives the duty, it will be cheaper and easier to cut, bend and weld than the higher XAR grades. Reserve the higher grades for where XAR 450 wears out too fast.

07Processing & Fabrication Guidelines

XAR 450 is workable in the workshop, but its carbon equivalent rises with hardness, so the rules tighten as you go up the ladder.

Topic Guideline
Further Heat Treatment Not intended. Supplied quenched and tempered; any anneal or re-quench lowers hardness and toughness
Cold Bending Feasible with a moderate minimum bend radius (a few times t); do a sample bend before tooling is committed
Cutting Laser, plasma and water-jet are the practical routes; water-jet best preserves the cut edge. Mechanical shearing needs heavy-duty, hardened tooling
Welding Weldable with a carbon equivalent of about 0.50–0.70: preheat (around 100 – 150 °C, more for thick sections), low-hydrogen consumables, controlled interpass; qualify the procedure for your thickness
Machining Carbide-tipped tools, rigid set-up, low speed and high feed, ample coolant
Workshop Safety Cutting and grinding make fine steel dust — wear suitable respiratory protection
Do not take a welding or bending number from a web page. The right preheat, consumable and bend radius depend on the exact heat and thickness. Tell us the operation and we will confirm the parameter set before you cut steel.

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Is XAR 450 a national standard grade (like ASTM or EN)?
No. XAR 450 is ThyssenKrupp’s proprietary abrasion-resistant brand, supplied to the XAR mill specification. It is not an ASTM or EN grade by itself, but it is broadly comparable to EN 10051 delivery conditions and to the NM450 / Hardox 450 wear plates at the same hardness.
Q2450 HBW, or an exact number?
450 is the nominal grade name. The XAR mill specification guarantees the delivered hardness band at 420–480 HBW; the exact rolled thickness and the producing mill are confirmed when you order. Inspect against that band on the MTC, not against the round number.
Q3What are the equivalent grades to XAR 450?
Hardox 450 and NM450 (SSAB / Chinese NM standard) are wear plates at the same hardness; NM450, Hardox 450, JFE EH450 and DILLIDUR 450V are also close. Chemistry, dimensions and test routines differ between mills, so confirm true equivalence on the mill test certificate rather than by name alone.
Q4Can XAR 450 be welded?
Yes. Welding typically needs preheat of around 100–150 °C (more for thicker sections), low-hydrogen consumables and a qualified procedure for the thickness; the carbon equivalent is about 0.50–0.70. It is delivered quenched and tempered and is not meant for further heat treatment.
Q5How do I choose the thickness?
From the wear duty, not the hardness number. a balanced moderate-to-heavy-duty grade — harder than XAR 400 for tougher wear, yet still reasonably formable and weldable. Step up the XAR ladder only where XAR 450 wears out too fast.
Q6What quantity, how fast, what paperwork?
From 1 ton, with typical lead times of about 5 days for 1–10 t, about 10 days for 10–50 t and negotiable above 50 t. Each heat ships with an MTC carrying hardness and ladle analysis; third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
Sources and limits: the figures on this page are reference information drawn from published XAR abrasion-resistant steel literature and producer data sheets. XAR 450 is supplied to the XAR mill specification; hardness (420–480 HBW) is the guaranteed property, while chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are typical and mill-dependent and must be confirmed on the mill test certificate of the lot supplied. XAR 450 is a pure abrasion-resistant (wear) plate — any ballistic-protection use is a different product and is not warranted by this page. BBN supplies, cuts and processes the plate.
