Product Introduction

01Product Overview

EN 10025-5 GRADE FAMILY W — WEATHERING S235J0W S235J2W S355J0W S355J2W S355K2W WP — P ALLOYED S355J0WP S355J2WP P 0.06–0.15 % J0 = 0 °C · J2 = −20 °C · K2 = higher energy same 355 MPa level sits in both families

S355J0WP is a hot rolled structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, supplied to EN 10025-5. It belongs to the European weathering steel family better known as Corten steel — alloyed with copper, chromium and phosphorus, it builds its own dense protective patina instead of relying on a paint film.

The trailing P is the part buyers most often miss. Standard weathering grades (S355J0W, S355J2W) keep phosphorus within a normal maximum. The WP grades specify phosphorus as a working range of 0.06–0.15 %, which is deliberately higher — it drives faster, denser patina formation. That same phosphorus is why a WP weld deserves more procedural care than a W weld, and it is the single difference that stops S355J0WP and S355J0W being treated as the same plate.

Structurally it is a full member of the 355 MPa family: 355 MPa minimum yield up to 16 mm, 470–630 MPa tensile, and 27 J minimum at 0 °C guaranteed by the J0 subgrade. It is therefore specified for real load-bearing outdoor work — bridges, stacks, towers and transport equipment — not only for cladding.

Note: This page is written against EN 10025-5 and the material number 1.8945. Several of the values below are standard minimum values, not typical mill results — every figure should be read off the mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) for the actual heat and thickness you receive. Where published sources disagree we say so in the chapter note rather than picking one number for you.

Note: We have deliberately not printed a thickness / width / length band for this item — the size actually available follows the rolling programme and your quantity, and we would rather confirm it against your order than publish a range we cannot stand behind. Send us the three dimensions, the quantity and the delivery condition and we will come back with what rolls. Two further points: (1) the standard properties are quoted for the as-delivered condition — quenched and tempered treatments are not part of the standard property table for this grade, so any heat treatment beyond as-rolled or normalizing rolled must be agreed at enquiry because it changes what the certificate can certify; (2) where the previous version of this page also offered S235J2W, S355J2G1W and S355J2G2W, those G1W / G2W suffixes belong to the earlier European designation practice and are written as S355J2W today — tell us which notation your drawings call up.

03Grade Designation & the EN 10025-5 Family

Every character in S355J0WP carries a specification. Reading it correctly is what separates this grade from the two it is most often confused with.

Symbol Meaning
S Structural steel — the EN 10025 series for construction steels
355 Specified minimum yield strength of 355 MPa at nominal thickness ≤ 16 mm
J0 Impact quality class — 27 J minimum at 0 °C, Charpy V-notch, longitudinal test pieces
W Improved atmospheric corrosion resistance (weathering)
P Phosphorus-alloyed — phosphorus is specified as a working range (0.06–0.15 %) rather than just a ceiling

Two comparisons decide almost every substitution question:

  S355J0W S355J0WP (this page)
Phosphorus Held to a normal maximum Specified range 0.06–0.15 %
Strength level 355 MPa family 355 MPa family — the P does not add strength
Impact class J0 — 27 J at 0 °C J0 — 27 J at 0 °C
Patina behaviour Weathering protection from Cr / Cu Cr / Cu plus higher P, which accelerates patina formation
Welding Standard practice Good weldability, but the higher P calls for a controlled procedure and low-hydrogen practice
Impact temperature 0 °C 0 °C — for −20 °C service specify S355J2WP instead
Note: The two comparisons above are the ones we get asked about most, and they are different questions. W vs WP is an alloying question (how the plate weathers and how carefully it must be welded). J0 vs J2 is a temperature question (how cold the detail gets). They are independent — you can need J2 and still not want the phosphorus. Within the family, J0 is verified at 27 J at 0 °C and J2 at 27 J at −20 °C; K2 exists in the standard as a further class and we will confirm its figures for the current edition on enquiry rather than quote a number we have not verified. Whichever you specify, write the full designation including the P on the purchase order — a PO that says S355J0W cannot be substituted upward to WP without your agreement, and inspection will not accept the swap.

04Equivalent & Cross-Standard Grades

Where this grade came from, and the nearest designations in other national systems — the names buyers search for when they already hold a drawing.

System Nearest Grade
EN material number 1.8945
European old standard (withdrawn) Fe 510 C1 K1 Fe 510 C1 KI under EN 10155 — the designation this grade carried before EN 10025-5 replaced it
Germany DIN / Werkstoff 9 CrNiCuP 3-2-4
Japan JIS SPA-H (JIS G3125)
France AFNOR E 36 WA 3
United Kingdom BS WR 50 A WR 50 B WR 50 C
ISO Fe 355 W-1A
China GB 09CuPCrNi-A (traditional designation); current GB/T 4171 family — Q355GNH is the group normally consulted for this strength level
Poland PN 10H
Czechia ČSN 15217
Similar weathering concept ASTM Corten A, A242 Type 1, A588 Grade A — same high-phosphorus weathering idea, not the same specification
Note: Nearest is not identical. The cross-references above are trades across national numbering systems — they line up closely on chemistry and strength level, but the phosphorus range, the tensile band, the impact temperature and the thickness limits each system sets are not the same, and the ASTM entries are a conceptual match rather than a specification match. Substitution must be approved against your design code, and it always needs to be backed by a certificate written to the standard you are actually buying to. Tell us the exact designation on the drawing and we will quote the plate that matches it.

05Chemical Composition

Ladle analysis limits for S355J0WP under EN 10025-5, alongside the product-analysis figures several published tables quote. Product analysis tolerances are wider because they are measured on the finished piece, not the heat.

Element Ladle Analysis (heat) Product Analysis (published figures)
C ≤ 0.12 % ≤ 0.15 %
Si ≤ 0.75 % ≤ 0.80 %
Mn ≤ 1.00 % ≤ 1.10 %
P 0.06 – 0.15 % 0.05 – 0.16 %
S ≤ 0.035 % ≤ 0.040 %
Cr 0.30 – 1.25 % 0.25 – 1.35 %
Cu 0.25 – 0.55 % 0.20 – 0.60 %
Ni may be present up to 0.65 % up to 0.70 %
N ≤ 0.009 % ≤ 0.010 %
Mo not listed in every edition ≤ 0.30 – 0.35 % in some tables
Note: Four things worth reading before you specify.
(1) Phosphorus is the defining element. Cr and Cu build the protective oxide layer; the higher P range of the WP grades accelerates and densifies it — and it is what separates this grade from S355J0W.
(2) Carbon is held to 0.12 % max to keep the plate weldable, but the higher phosphorus still means low-hydrogen practice belongs in the weld procedure — see section 08.
(3) Nitrogen is conditional. The 0.009 % maximum does not apply when the composition shows a minimum total aluminium of 0.020 % or contains sufficient other nitrogen-binding elements — and the standard requires those binding elements to be stated on the inspection document. Ask for them if your weld procedure depends on it. A reference carbon-equivalent ceiling of 0.52 max is published for this grade; calculate CEV from the actual heat analysis rather than a typical value.
(4) The table previously published on this page labelled the 0.009 % cell as V (vanadium). EN 10025-5 does not set a vanadium limit for this grade — that figure is the nitrogen maximum, and we have corrected the row. Because of the point about nitrogen binding above, please check the certificate rather than assuming either interpretation.
Two further version effects: for long products the P and S content may run 0.005 % higher, and molybdenum appears in some published tables and not others — both differences depend on the edition, so confirm against the version cited on your order.

06Weathering Performance & Patina Formation

The rust is not damage — it is the protection system. How it develops decides whether this material belongs on your structure.

1

Initial Exposure

Freshly descaled plate oxidises on site. Runoff staining of adjacent concrete, stone or paving is normal in this first phase and needs detailing for.

2

Wet & Dry Cycling

Repeated wetting and drying drives copper, chromium and the elevated phosphorus into a dense, tightly bonded oxide layer.

3

Patina Densification

The layer becomes adherent and non-porous, cutting off the transport of oxygen and moisture to the base steel.

4

Stabilised Protection

Corrosion rate falls away and the plate is protected for its service life with no paint and no coating — which removes the repainting cycle from the maintenance budget.

Note: The patina stabilises only where the surface genuinely gets to dry out. In continuously humid or permanently shaded positions, in marine salt-spray exposure, where de-icing salt runoff collects, and in buried or immersed service, it does not stabilise and a coating system should be specified instead. Two practical consequences follow: design the drainage so the plate can dry, and protect the surrounding concrete and paving from initial runoff staining. The higher phosphorus of this grade speeds up patina formation, but the pay-off is about appearance and initial speed — it is not a licence to use it in a chloride environment. Tell us the exposure condition and we will say honestly whether a bare weathering grade suits the job.

07Mechanical Properties

Standard minimum values for S355J0WP. Strength moves with thickness, and the elongation figures are read off two different gauge lengths — which is the most common source of confusion on this grade.

Property Nominal Thickness Requirement
Minimum yield strength ReH t ≤ 16 mm 355 MPa
  16 < t ≤ 40 mm 345 MPa
Tensile strength Rm t ≤ 3 mm 510 – 680 MPa
  3 < t ≤ 100 mm 470 – 630 MPa
Minimum elongation A, L0 = 80 mm 1.5 – 2 mm 16 %
  2 – 2.5 mm 17 %
  2.5 – 3 mm 18 %
Minimum elongation A, L0 = 5.65 √S0 3 – 40 mm 22 %
Charpy V-notch energy KV, longitudinal applicable thickness range 27 J minimum at 0 °C
Note: Three things you should hold on to.
(1) Strength is thickness-dependent. Yield drops from 355 to 345 MPa above 16 mm, and the tensile band is different below 3 mm — quote the thickness when you ask for a figure.
(2) The two elongation groups are not comparable. Below 3 mm the minimum is measured on an 80 mm non-proportional gauge length; from 3 mm up it is measured on a proportional L0 = 5.65 √S0 specimen. The numbers rise across the thin bands and jump to 22 % — that is the change of specimen, not the steel getting more ductile. Several published tables quote 20 % for the 3–40 mm band, and some show 16–18 % because they are carrying the thin-sheet figures forward; we publish the 22 % proportional value and flag the disagreement rather than pick a number for you.
(3) Beyond 40 mm we publish nothing. Several mill and merchant pages list further de-rating above 40 mm (335, 325 and 315 MPa bands), but the references we could verify do not carry values past 40 mm for this grade, so those cells stay blank rather than being filled in. The previous version of this page summarised everything as yield 345–355 MPa, tensile 470–680 MPa, elongation 16–17 % — those were the extremes of the bands now broken out above. Confirm the figures for your thickness and condition on the MTC.

08Processing & Fabrication Parameters

How this plate behaves in the workshop. Everything below is shop practice and supplier recommendation — it is not set by EN 10025-5, and it must be qualified against your own procedure.

Item Practice & Notes
Cutting Flame, plasma and laser cutting to drawing. Preheat depends on thickness and on the carbon equivalent of the actual heat — take it from the certificate rather than a rule of thumb. Do not cut cold-soaked plate in freezing conditions without checking the procedure.
Cold Forming Bend and roll forming supported by the 22 % proportional elongation of the standard band. Where heavy cold forming changes the mechanical properties significantly, stress-relief annealing or normalizing is applied to bring them back — agree this before fabrication rather than after.
Welding Good weldability, but the elevated phosphorus of the WP grades is why a controlled procedure with low-hydrogen consumables belongs in the WPS. Consumables commonly recommended for this family: SMAW E7018 / E7016, GMAW ER70S-6, FCAW E71T-1, SAW EM12K with a suitable flux. Where the weld must develop a patina matching the parent plate, specify weathering-grade consumables.
Hot Forming Performed where the section demands it. Hot forming changes the delivery condition the standard certifies against, so re-establish the mechanical values afterwards or re-test — do not assume the original certificate still applies.
Delivery Condition As Rolled (+AR) Normalizing Rolled (+N) Normalized TMCP — declared on the order and printed on the certificate
Tolerances EN 10029 for thickness, width, length and flatness at the class ordered; mill edge or cut edge
Inspection UT EN 10160 Z15 / Z25 / Z35 EN 10204 3.1 EN 10204 3.2 SGS / BV / TUV witness
Note: Do not treat this chapter as a qualified procedure. We supply the heat analysis so your Pcm and CEV can be calculated from the actual plate you are buying instead of a typical composition, and the low-hydrogen recommendation above is there because phosphorus is genuinely higher in WP material than buyers expect. Ask for the inspection document to show the nitrogen-binding elements too — the standard only waives the nitrogen maximum when they are declared on it.

09Applications & Typical Uses

Specified where structural strength and a controlled rust appearance are both wanted, and where nobody wants to pay for a repainting cycle.

Architecture & Facades

Building facades, curtain wall panels, screens, landscaping walls and sculptural features where the weathered surface is the finish.

Bridges & Highway Structures

Plate girder and box members, parapets, barriers and pedestrian crossings — assessed by the bridge engineer against fatigue and exposure.

Stacks, Flues & Smokestacks

Chimney shells, flue gas housings and industrial ducting withstanding continuous atmospheric exposure.

Railway Wagons & Containers

Freight wagon bodies, container shells and vehicle structural parts where paint life is the maintenance cost being removed.

Towers & Outdoor Plant

Transmission towers, equipment supports, outdoor enclosures and structural steelwork in permanent atmospheric exposure.

10Core Advantages

Five reasons this grade keeps being specified for outdoor structural work.

1

Phosphorus-Driven Patina

The specified 0.06–0.15 % phosphorus range works with Cr and Cu to form the protective layer faster and denser than standard weathering grades.

2

Structural Strength, Not Cladding

355 MPa minimum yield up to 16 mm and 470–630 MPa tensile — a genuine load-bearing plate, roughly half again the yield of the 235 family.

3

Verified 0 °C Toughness

The J0 class carries a 27 J minimum at 0 °C, so the guarantee is written into the specification rather than implied by it.

4

The Repainting Cycle Is Removed

No initial paint system and no periodic repainting in suitable environments — the saving lands on the operating budget, not just the construction budget.

5

Workable in the Shop

Cuts, forms and welds on conventional equipment. The higher phosphorus asks for low-hydrogen consumables and a controlled procedure, which most shops meet without difficulty.

We supply EN 10025-5 S355J0WP weathering steel plate with declared delivery condition, full identification to material number 1.8945 and EN 10204 3.1 certification, with 3.2, ultrasonic testing to EN 10160, through-thickness Z15 / Z25 / Z35 and third-party witness available where the project demands them. Processing covers cutting, bending, forming, drilling and surface treatment to your drawings. Tell us the thickness, dimensions, quantity and exposure condition and we will quote against the item — including whether S355J0WP or S355J2WP is the right call for your temperature.

11Other Weathering Steel Grades We Supply

Comparing families rather than guessing a substitution? These are the related grades, grouped the way they are actually specified.

Note: These are related, not interchangeable. W and WP differ in phosphorus, J0 and J2 differ in test temperature, and each national system sets its own tensile band and thickness limits. Choose on the two questions that matter — how much phosphorus need, and how cold the detail gets — then confirm the substitution against your design code and the certificate for the item you actually order.

12Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions we are asked most often about S355J0WP. Anything not covered here — send us the drawing.

Q1What does S355J0WP mean, and how is it different from S355J0W?
Read it in five parts: S = structural steel, 355 = 355 MPa minimum yield at thickness ≤ 16 mm, J0 = 27 J minimum Charpy energy at 0 °C, W = improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, and P = phosphorus-alloyed. The P is the difference from S355J0W: where the W grades simply keep phosphorus inside a maximum, S355J0WP specifies phosphorus as a working range of 0.06–0.15 %. That higher phosphorus accelerates and densifies the protective patina — and it is why a WP weld wants low-hydrogen consumables and a controlled procedure. Strength and impact class are identical between the two; only the alloying route differs.
Q2Our older drawings call up EN 10155 or Fe 510 C1 K1. Is that still valid?
The designation is still recognisable, but EN 10155 has been withdrawn and EN 10025-5 supersedes it — the same material is carried under the new name. In the older notation this grade appeared as Fe 510 C1 K1 (also cited as Fe 510 C1 KI); today it is S355J0WP, material number 1.8945. Practical advice: quote both notations on the enquiry so everyone knows what is meant, specify to the current edition for new projects, and note that where old drawings use the G1W / G2W suffixes, current practice writes those as S355J2W. We keep a separate page for the withdrawn EN 10155 S355J2WP listing if that is what your documents reference.
Q3Can S355J0WP really be left unpainted?
It can, provided the surface is allowed to dry out. The patina stabilises under alternating wet and dry conditions. In permanently humid or shaded positions, in marine salt-spray exposure, where de-icing salt runoff collects, and in buried or immersed service, it does not stabilise and a coating system should be specified instead. Detail the drainage so the plate can dry, and protect adjacent concrete, stone or paving from the runoff staining that occurs in the first months — that staining is expected behaviour, not a defect. Tell us the exposure and we will say honestly whether bare weathering plate suits the job.
Q4How does it weld, and is the phosphorus a problem?
Weldability is good, but the elevated phosphorus is real and it belongs in your procedure — specify low-hydrogen consumables and a controlled WPS. Consumables commonly recommended for this family are E7018 / E7016 for SMAW, ER70S-6 for GMAW, E71T-1 for FCAW and EM12K with a suitable flux for SAW; use weathering-grade consumables where the weld has to develop a patina matching the parent plate. We supply the heat analysis so Pcm and CEV come from the actual plate rather than a typical value, and we will show the nitrogen-binding elements on the inspection document — the standard only waives the nitrogen maximum when they are declared. Cold forming is well supported; where heavy cold forming changes the properties significantly, stress-relief annealing or normalizing is applied.
Q5What strength do I actually get, and does it depend on thickness?
Yes. Yield is 355 MPa minimum up to 16 mm and 345 MPa from 16 to 40 mm. Tensile is 510–680 MPa up to 3 mm and 470–630 MPa above it. Elongation is 22 % minimum from 3 to 40 mm on a proportional specimen, and 16 / 17 / 18 % below 3 mm on an 80 mm gauge length — the apparent jump is a change of specimen, not a change of material. Impact is 27 J minimum at 0 °C in the longitudinal direction. Above 40 mm we publish no figures because the references we verified carry none; several published tables show further de-rating, and we would rather you confirm that against your ordered edition. If your detail sees −20 °C, you need S355J2WP rather than this grade.
Q6What sizes, MOQ, lead time and certificates do you supply?
The available size follows the rolling programme — we deliberately do not publish a fixed band for this item, so send us the thickness, width, length and quantity and we will confirm what rolls. The standard property table runs from 1.5 mm to 100 mm. MOQ is 1 ton, from the lowest bracket of our quantity schedule; lead time is 5 days for 1–10 t, 10 days for 10–50 t and negotiable above that. Delivery can be as rolled, normalizing rolled, normalized or TMCP, declared on the order and the certificate. Certification is EN 10204 3.1 as standard with 3.2, UT to EN 10160, Z15 / Z25 / Z35 and SGS / BV / TUV witness available. Payment is by L/C, T/T, D/P, Western Union, Paypal or Money Gram.
