Product Introduction

01Product Overview

RAEX WEAR PLATE 450 HBW

RAEX 450 is an abrasion resistant steel supplied as the Raex® brand wear plate, at a nominal 450 HBW. The name is a brand; the number is the nominal Brinell hardness. It is delivered quenched and tempered (Q&T) and is a heavy-wear grade in the Raex® 400–500 range, used where ordinary or moderate-wear plate would wear through too fast.

RAEX 450 is bought for heavy sliding and impact wear — truck-body and dumper liners, excavator buckets, chutes, hoppers, crushers and ground-engaging parts in mining, quarrying and bulk handling. Where even 400 HBW is not enough, the range steps up to RAEX 450 and RAEX 500.

02Technical Specifications

What this page publishes, and what must be confirmed on the mill certificate when you enquire.

Item Specification
Executive Standard Raex® producer mill specification (a proprietary quenched-and-tempered wear-plate specification). The grade carries no single ASTM or EN designation, but Hardox 450 and XAR 450 are trade plates at a similar nominal hardness
Steel Grade RAEX 450 (nominal 450 HBW)
Steel Category Abrasion resistant / wear plate, heavy-duty
Product Form Hot-rolled plate, quenched and tempered (Q+T)
Thickness Range Typically 3 – 80 mm; the exact rolled thickness and maximum available thickness are confirmed with the mill and narrow slightly as the nominal hardness rises
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme; cut-to-length and cut-to-shape available
Thickness Covered by Published Data The whole Raex® range; the figures below are typical and mill-dependent
MOQ 1 ton (mixed sizes negotiable)
Lead Time by Quantity 1 – 10 t: about 5 days; 10 – 50 t: about 10 days; > 50 t: negotiable
Payment Terms L/C, T/T, D/P, Western Union, Paypal, Money Gram
Processing Services Cutting (laser / plasma / water-jet), bending, drilling, welding, surface preparation
Certification Mill test certificate (MTC) with hardness and ladle analysis; third-party inspection on request
Only the nominal hardness is the guaranteed property. Raex® fixes RAEX 450’s nominal 450 HBW; the exact delivered hardness band varies with thickness and with the producing mill, and thicker plates can guarantee a slightly lower through-hardened hardness at the core. Chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are mill-typical values — confirm the exact composition and mechanicals on the MTC of the lot you buy.

03How to Read the Grade

The brand name tells you the product family and the hardness; it tells you nothing about chemistry or welding behaviour.

Part Meaning
Raex® The brand name for a quenched-and-tempered abrasion resistant (wear) plate — made to resist sliding and impact wear, not to carry structural load as its primary job
450 Nominal Brinell hardness, 450 HBW. The real delivery band is defined by the producer’s mill specification and narrows with thickness

Where RAEX 450 sits in the Raex® 400–500 wear-plate ladder

Grade Nominal HBW Use when
RAEX 400 400 Heavy wear where moderate-wear plate is not enough; the most formable of the three
RAEX 450 450 Heavier sliding and impact wear
RAEX 500 500 The most severe abrasive / impact duty; least formable
Hardox / XAR (same numbers) 400 / 450 / 500 Trade plates at similar nominal hardness; chemistry and routines differ by mill
Start at the lowest grade that survives the wear. RAEX 400 is the most formable and weldable grade in the Raex® 400–500 range, so it is the right first choice where 400 HBW is enough. Step up the ladder only where the lower grade wears out too quickly.

04Chemical Composition

Because RAEX 450 is made to a hardness target, the analysis below is a typical window seen across major wear-plate producers. Your heat’s real chemistry is on its MTC.

Element Typical Content (max unless noted), %
C ≤ 0.30 (rises with hardness; higher than the moderate-wear grades)
Mn ≤ 1.60
Si ≤ 0.70
Cr ≤ 1.20
Mo ≤ 0.70
Ni ≤ 1.20
Ti / Nb / V ≤ 0.10 (optional, grain refinement / hardenability)
B ≤ 0.005
P ≤ 0.025
S ≤ 0.015
Carbon Equivalent (CEV) about 0.45 – 0.65 (typical) — higher than the moderate-wear grades, so welding needs more care
Processing Fine-grained, aluminium-killed; quenched and tempered
The chemistry is mill-dependent. Different producers reach the same nominal 450 HBW with different recipes, so these figures are a representative range, not a guaranteed composition. Specify and verify against the MTC of the lot you receive.

05Mechanical Properties & Tolerance

Only the nominal hardness is a guaranteed delivery property. The rest are typical values for design reference.

Property Value Status
Surface / bulk hardness 450 HBW nominal (band per producer mill spec) Guaranteed (the only guaranteed item, per Raex® mill spec)
Yield strength about 1150 MPa (167 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Tensile strength about 1400 MPa (203 ksi) Typical, not guaranteed
Elongation A5 about 8 – 12 % Typical
Charpy V-notch impact grade / heat-dependent; where specified typically 20 – 40 J at low temperature Typical / not guaranteed

Thickness tolerance, flatness and surface

Item Requirement
Thickness Tolerance Per producing mill standard (commonly 0 / + per mm of thickness); exact value on the MTC
Flatness Per mill standard / EN 10051-class acceptance where agreed
Width & Length Per mill rolling programme
Surface Quality Per mill standard; descaled and inspected before despatch
Hardness is the number you can rely on. RAEX 450 is sold and accepted on its Brinell value. Yield, tensile and impact are useful for estimating, but any of them used in a calculation must come from a test on the delivered lot, not from this page.

06Wear Service and Thickness Selection

RAEX 450 is a heavy-wear grade in the Raex® range. Choose a thickness from the wear duty, not from the hardness number.

Wear-service guidance (by duty, not by a table)

Duty How the thickness is chosen
Truck-body / dumper liners Set by the wear rate you can tolerate; 6 – 25 mm is common for heavy-duty bodies
Excavator buckets / cutting edges Set by impact energy and the weld-on profile; RAEX 400–450 stay weldable for most bucket rebuilds
Chutes / hoppers / transfer points Set by the abrasiveness and velocity of the flowing material
Ground-engaging / scraper parts Set by soil and aggregate abrasiveness; step to 500 only for the hardest duty
Do not over-specify. If RAEX 450 survives the duty, it will be cheaper and easier to cut, bend and weld than the next grade up. Reserve the higher grades for where the lower one wears out too fast.

07Processing & Fabrication Guidelines

RAEX 450 is a high-hardness wear plate — weldability and formability fall as the nominal HBW rises, so the workshop rules get stricter with each step up.

Topic Guideline
Further Heat Treatment Not intended. Supplied quenched and tempered; any anneal or re-quench lowers hardness and toughness
Cold Bending Feasible with a generous minimum bend radius (several times t); do a sample bend before tooling is committed
Cutting Laser, plasma and water-jet are the practical routes; water-jet best preserves the cut edge. Mechanical shearing needs heavy-duty, hardened tooling
Welding Weldable with a higher carbon equivalent (CEV about 0.45 – 0.65): preheat (around 150 – 200 °C), low-hydrogen consumables, controlled interpass; qualify the procedure for your thickness
Machining Carbide-tipped tools, rigid set-up, low speed and high feed, ample coolant
Workshop Safety Cutting and grinding make fine steel dust — wear suitable respiratory protection
Do not take a welding or bending number from a web page. The right preheat, consumable and bend radius depend on the exact heat and thickness. Tell us the operation and we will confirm the parameter set before you cut steel.

08Typical Applications

Where a heavy-wear plate does the work.

Truck & Dumper Liners

Body, tailgate and hopper liners for heavy-duty hauling of rock, aggregate and ore.

Bucket & Cutting Edges

Excavator and loader buckets, cutting edges and wear bars where welding repair is routine.

Crushers & Mills

10Frequently Asked Questions

Q1Is RAEX 450 a national or international standard grade (for example a standard NM or AR wear-plate grade)?
No — RAEX 450 is a Raex® brand wear plate supplied to the producer’s proprietary mill specification; it carries no single ASTM or EN grade name. The number 450 is the nominal Brinell hardness. Hardox 450 and XAR 450 are trade plates at a similar nominal hardness.
Q2450 HBW, or an exact number?
450 is the nominal grade name. The producer’s mill specification defines the actual delivered hardness band, which narrows with thickness and varies between mills. Order and inspect against the band on the MTC, not against the round number.
Q3What are the equivalent grades to RAEX 450?
Hardox 450 (SSAB) and XAR 450 (Salzgitter / Ilsenburger) are wear plates at a similar nominal hardness. Chemistry, dimensions and test routines differ between mills, so confirm true equivalence on the mill test certificate rather than by name alone.
Q4Can RAEX 450 be welded?
Yes, but it needs more care than moderate-wear plate because of its higher carbon equivalent (CEV about 0.45 – 0.65). Welding typically needs preheat of around 150–200 °C, low-hydrogen consumables and a qualified procedure for the thickness. It is delivered quenched and tempered and is not meant for further heat treatment.
Q5How do I choose the thickness?
From the wear duty, not the hardness number. RAEX 450 is a heavy-wear grade in the Raex® 400–500 range, so use it where moderate-wear plate is not enough and step up to the next grade only where it wears out too fast.
Q6RAEX 450 vs RAEX 400 — when should I step up?
RAEX 450 is the next step above RAEX 400 (450 vs 400 nominal HBW). It resists heavier sliding and impact wear, but is a little harder to cut, bend and weld. Choose 450 only where 400 HBW wears out too quickly; if even 450 is not enough, step up to RAEX 500.
Sources and limits: the figures on this page are reference information drawn from published Raex® wear-plate literature and producer data sheets. RAEX 450 is supplied to the Raex® producer mill specification; nominal hardness (450 HBW) is the guaranteed property, while chemistry, yield, tensile and impact are typical and mill-dependent and must be confirmed on the mill test certificate of the lot supplied. Raex® is a registered wear-plate trademark; BBN supplies, cuts and processes the plate and the mill certificate is issued by the producing mill. RAEX 450 is a pure abrasion-resistant (wear) plate — any ballistic-protection use is a different product and is not warranted by this page.
